Run
Comments: Finally owned the Boston marathon course and broke 3:20 on it. Held back like crazy for the first 17 miles. Let packs of runners blow past (that was hard), but it was warm and I could feel from the first step it was gonna be uncomfortable. At mile 13 did a check in, feeling pretty strong. Looked ahead to 17, ready to test out what I had left. On the first set of hills (ugggh) I felt surprisingly good. Was able to drive a little. So, I had something left. Ran up every hill strong, passing tons of walkers (and ack -- carnage on the course, so many people lying on the ground getting help from medical). I think people underestimated the impact of the 60+ degree temps and the fact that the sun came out. Was able to drop the pace during the last parts on Commonwealth. It was hard, but I knew I had that extra gear in me. SO happy with the result. What would you do differently?: Honestly, nothing. I feel I nailed this one and totally hit my goal. Very happy with the result. Post race
Warm down: Hobbled back to the hotel, legs on fire. Showered and tried to stretch/relax. Hamstrings were supremely uncomfortable for two hours, then finally stopped hurting in that terrible way. Oof. What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat. Can we get ONE good cool day in this town where it's not also storming like hell? Event comments: Boston. Forever my favorite race. Took a private bus to the start, NEVER using the school buses again, it was magical. Downpour rain while we sat in the bus, which cleared up pretty fast, but I did not want to sit in the mudpit that is the athlete's village.
Ate my pb sandwich (the whole thing!) and drank water.
None, people. It's a marathon.
