Pre-race routine:

Breakfast was two Pop Tarts, because that's what its going to be next weekend in Miami. I also had my coffee.
Stacey drove in from Round Hill and parked at my place, and then I drove us in to National Harbor. We made our way down to the event, hit the port o pots (short lines) and then grabbed a few pictures of the views of National Harbor. Our friend Liz woke up with a cold, so she wasn't able to join us. And Stacey is battling some achilles and PF issues, so she decided to drop from the 10k to the 5k and run with me.
Event warmup:

We bounced up and down while waiting in line. Earlier this week it was 77 degrees, and race morning was mid 30s. No time to acclimate at all, but fortunately the event had....Hot Apple Cider!

Comments:

My plan originally was to keep it in Zone 3 for the first mile, Zone 4 for the second, Zone 5a for the third, then sprint in. As it happens, I spent most of my time in Zone 3. The first mile was fairly crowded, but then as soon as the road opened up we climbed a pretty long hill, which reduced me to walking. And then the last mile included running past Air Force One, and fantastic views of the Potomac, so OF COURSE we had to stop a bunch and take pictures. I ran in the last quarter mile or so and felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I haven't run much since my sprain, and not hard at all. This was about being with friends and having a good time.
Post race
Warm down:

We crossed the finish line, walked a bit, then went in search of swag. Each participant got a mug and a caramel apple. We also stood in line to get our picture taken with the huge inflatable hot cider mug. By that point, we were both ready to head home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

After the sprain I didn't have consistency in workouts. There were a lot of skipped speed workouts.

Event comments:

I have never been to such a large 5k in my life. It felt like a party atmosphere! Granted, there was a 10k running at the same time, but everything felt really big and fun. Posing for pictures, lots of swag, a pretty course...really solid overall. Not a course to try for a PR on, as it doesn't open up until mile 2, so you can open be reduced to walking after getting stuck behind strollers on the narrow path.
