Swim
Comments: Don't have a split on this. Timing chip didn't register and my watch malfunctioned (operator error most likely). Tried to take it easy knowing I have zero base and didn't want to go anaerobic early. Felt good for 200-300m but the HR really spiked near the end. Swimming directly into the sun made sighting difficult on the last major stretch. Would say I was probably top 10 for the wave coming out of the water, for whatever that is worth. Transition 1
Comments: Again no split, but know it was slow. The air temp was probably around 50 so I wanted to dry off, get socks on, and also struggled to shed my wetsuite (zipper fly cord wrapped around my ankle inside the suit as I was peeling if off). Also had to walk across a bunch of gravel within the transition area, requiring a slow pace.. Easily a 4-5 minute transition. Bike
Comments: A little slower than my goal. Was hoping for 20 mph average. Limiting factors - a mount line at the base of steep gravel grade that had me aborting three mount attempts before deciding to run to the top of the hill (almost dumped on the ground the final attempt), a dismount line 30-40 yards from transition and at the top of previously mentioned grade (can only walk down the grade so fast in bike shoes), and lingering effects from the high swim HR. Take out the extra mount/dismount time and the average speed was probably more respectable. On the plus side I could stay in aero position on the uphill grades when those around me jumped out of the saddle (allowing me to gain on them). In hindsight, I could have pushed a bit harder without altering the eventual outcome of the run. Transition 2
What would you do differently?: No split. Went well other than the dismount line being so far away and adding time (60-90 second impact)? Run
Comments: This felt horrible from the start. Instantly wanted to walk, especially the first 1/2 mile that was uphill. Fought the urge and ran the whole thing but HR was easily over 175 the whole time (peaking at 186) - an unpleasant run overall. Need to incorporate some strength training to work on hip fatigue felt while running. More brick runs in training would also be helpful in the future. Post race
Event comments: I give the organizer a heap of credit. Not easy to put on an event in the middle of a pandemic. Overall the course was fair. Plenty of elevation changes but no major grinds. My only complaint is the bike mount and dismount locations, but that may have been to accommodate extra spacing for covid-19 safety. Last updated: 2020-10-01 12:00 AM
