Pre-race routine:

Breakfast 4 waffles, 12 oz OJ, coffee. Drank a gatoraid and water while waiting.
At course honey stinger waffle and then GU just before entering water.
Set up bike and nutrition for the ride. Talked to some other athletes, met a few interesting people.
Event warmup:

1.2 mile walk from T1 to Swim start
Swim
  • 1h 55m 33s
  • 4306 yards
  • 02m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was hard to spot buoys on the way out the return was much better
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster
Transition 1
  • 12m 11s
Comments:

Really long run from swim out to bike in bare feet on asphalt. It hurt. no carpets down and they wouldn't let me take shorter route to my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Hopefully next time they have strippers and a changing tent. It was difficult to put on my shirt as it was raining while I was trying to dress. I got twisted up and had to take my shirt off and try again.
Bike
  • 7h 54m 3s

  • 14.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Dangerous bike course. The road conditions were deplorable. I had a flat and two mechanicals because of the roads. I had to stop to fix the flat. The tire was underinflated from the CO2. I must have taken it off too soon. I rode roughly 10 miles with 60lbs of pressure. My mistake for not practicing more.
What would you do differently?:

Not race here. I could have practiced more with my CO2. I think I will carry fewer fluids and rely more on the aid stations.
Transition 2
  • 06m 38s
Comments:

Good transition. It went smoothly
Run
  • 6h 40m 30s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 15m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

One of the nicest run courses I've been on. Not nice enough for me to come back. I was exhausted after the bad bike. I struggled to run most of the race. My legs were dead. I did make a friend on the run. We walked together for quite a while. I ended up leaving him on the last couple of miles. I had a slight hope I could get done under 17.
What would you do differently?:

Not race here. The volunteers were great! I wish I had learned the run 15 strides walk 15 strides trick earlier. I think I could have taken a lot of time off of my run.
Post race
Warm down:

Med tent and IV is always an instant road to recovery

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The bike

Event comments:

Tulsa is a great city. The people here want the race here and are very welcoming. I cannot say enough about the hospitality of the people in this city. The residents the volunteers everyone from here was great. The bike course is horrible! The most dangerous course I have ever ridden. So many of the roads were all potholes. Many of the downhills were just chewed up and dangerous. IM needs to find a safer route.

Course: Worst bike course I have ever ridden!. Hills were as expected. The pavement conditions was substandard. The pavement was so bad many of the downhills were dangerous! I won't be back. Rain didn't help, but that is part of racing. I did well with eating and hydration. I think I'm going to go back to tang in my water bottle. It is milder than Gatoraid. I almost lost it on a downhill. my tire jumped and skidded. Fortunately I was able to get it under control.
