Pre-race routine:

Not many options in the area, so hotel coffee and a cereal bar. Packed to food on my bike. Checked tires and they seemed ok. Still pumped them up to 100 psi. Chatted with my bike neighbors and dressed for the swim. In line for the swim chatted with other contestants. The swim buoys went were lined up along some sailboats. The discussion was who is going to swim into the sailboats and conk their heads.
Event warmup:

Light stretching.
Swim
  • 51m 51s
  • 2136 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. I sighted well. The large sailboats anchored along the course really helped. If If couldn't see those in the water....(you figure out something clever to say yourself, why should I do all the work),
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. I need to learn to swim faster.
Transition 1
  • 09m 7s
Comments:

Good transition. Tip for readers. If you use the porta-potty, lock the door. Not my issue, but the person I walked in on was not pleased.
What would you do differently?:

The Maurten energy gum was a bad choice. It was like chewing wax candy.
Bike
  • 3h 09m 12s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.76 mile/hr
Comments:

It was a fun bike course. It had a good mix of hills and flat sections. I did yell at a guy who was blocking on the fastest down hill. He was blocking 3 of us on the descent. It was very frustrating, so I yelled for him to move over. He did, but it was clear he did not know what he was doing on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water and less gator aid
Transition 2
  • 06m 37s
Comments:

Good transition. Everything went well. One of my bike neighbors was a slob. He threw his stuff everywhere, including his wetsuit on my running gear. Fortunately, I have a friend named Janyne who taught me to use 2 gallon zip lock bags to keep your gear in. Everything was dry Thank You Janyne.
What would you do differently?:

Probably nothing. It was a good transitiion
Run
  • 3h 09m 14s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 14m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

I had issues and things did not go the way they should. I had fun, talked to a lot of people, saw an ex brother in law. He and I always got along (I like him more than my sister in law). I used ice to keep cool. Struggled to keep things down.
What would you do differently?:

I think I need to stop drinking gator aid and look for other sources of fluids and nutrition.
Post race
Warm down:

Collapsed on a bench until my wife picked me up. No place to show, so I went to a public bath house and rinsed off in a beach shower. Down kid yourself they do not heat the water for those things. Then I turned on the heated seat in her car and slept the entire 3 hour ride home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition and hydration

Event comments:

This was a great race. The course and venue were the best. The most welcoming town I ever raced in! The people who lived there and owned businesses wanted the race there. Businesses that were normally closed on Sundays were open during the entire event. Frankfort MI is a great place to visit. I will go back
