Pre-race routine:

Nothing special, just woke up and double checked that I had everything. And ate a Cliff Bar on the way to the race.
Event warmup:

I got there early and found some limited parking on the street. I walked around a bit then met up with Jeff (Q) and his friend Jason when they got there. Hey Jeff wore his BT tri suit, now I wish I would have worn mine. We made our way to the entrance ramp to the expressway (start line). I decided to leave my Ipod in the car, I hardly run with it and the arm strap is still uncomfortable to me. Now as we are about to race into the sun on the highest road in Tampa with nothing to shade us I realize that I left my visor and sunglasses in the car. Well I have 2 minutes to mile a mile round trip, ok this will be a lesson learned. I guess I'll be looking at a lot of shoes on the way out.

Comments:

This was something my body was not prepared for. The first 2 miles were ok for me. I was surviving the sun in my eyes and talked a bit with a couple of people. Then I saw Jeff heading back in after the turn. It wasn't long after this that breathing became difficult for me. I'm still feeling the effects from being knocked down for two weeks with an ear infection. Around mile 3 my breathing was a little better but then my legs felt like lead. This battle went back and forth for 2 more miles. Once I reached mile 5 I was able to maintain a 10 minute pace, and I was so happy to see a nice decline for the last 1/4 mile to the finish. I saw Jeff cheering me in about 100 feet before the finish. My legs were now heavy and wobbly. I grabbed my time card and saw someone hand me a water bottle (this is what I really needed) and got my finishers medal.
What would you do differently?:

Just got to get my endurance back to where it was then raise it. Only way to do that is with more training. And not get sick anymore.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked back over to where Jeff and Jason were waiting. We watched the leaders for the 5K to come in. We knew Lee Stevens was going to win, but he was slow today. Something like a 16 minute 5K, I'm sure he's not too broken up about it. Ok, I'm finally filling out the time card and this lady yells at me "You're supposed to fill those out over there, give me back my pen!" I kept quiet, but I felt like saying 'B!tch back off before I throw you over the edge of this on ramp!! But that would have turned the finish area into a crime scene and we would have been late for breakfast.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited training with an ear infection. And I could have used more water on the course. I think there were 3 water stations but they handed out these tiny cups. They were like paper shot glasses.

Event comments:

Without taking into account for my unpreparedness this was a good race. There were lots to eat and drink after the race. We grabbed a few things, couldn't pass up Smoothie King, and we headed to Waffle House. Nice set up for music even though poor choice of music. I was surprised to see so much there with this being the first year. I'm sure I'll enjoy it more next year with sunglasses and adequate training.

I had my watch with me, left my HRM at home. I wasn't too concerned with my HR. Around the first mile someone passed me with a similar HRM and it changed my watch from reading my race time to my HR. And with my HRM at home there was no way to change it back.
Course: This was an out and back over the Selmon Expressway upper deck.I thought it was flat from driving beneath it, but there are long gradual inclines.
