Swim
Comments: Here's where I started doing poorly. Somehow walking to the swim I threw out my earplugs instead of my gum. I tried to find them, but the trash was gross. The reason I use ear plugs is because in my first Tri, I was very dizzy getting out of the water. I did a search here on BT and some people said that ear plugs help with dizziness so I tried them and it worked really well for me, and I haven't had any dizziness since I started using them. I tried putting my swim cap over my ears hoping that would help, but it kept slipping up. Well anyway, the whole swim I was thinking about my cap, and whether or not I would be dizzy, and with all that thinking I never got into any kind of rythym. I'm not a very fast swimmer, but I'm usually pretty smooth, and with the wetsuit it feels pretty easy, but on this swim I was totally uncoordinated, and the whole thing felt like a struggle. So I get near the finish, and I'm trying to tell myself, you will NOT be dizzy, but it didn't work. I stood up, and I couldn't walk straight, and felt like I would throw up. I kept stepping on big rocks because I couldn't get my feet to go where I wanted them to. It felt like forever to get out of the water, although I'm sure it was only a minute or 2. I tried to run to transition, but almost fell, so I mostly walked. What would you do differently?: Ummm....not throw out earplugs and have an extra pair? Transition 1
Comments: I tried to hold onto my bike while taking off wetsuit, but I almost fell down, so I decided to sit down, and somehow, that made me even dizzier, and I felt like I would throw up. So I just really took my time, so this was very slow. Had trouble putting on my shirt, which has never happened before. After the race my wife pointed out that my shirt was backwards. What would you do differently?: Not be a dizzy fool. Bike
Comments: I was still feeling nauseous, so I took it very easy in the beginning, although I did pass a couple of people on the first hill. About half way through I started to feel better, so I started to push a little, and managed to pass a couple people going up the big hill. The bike was OK although in the first half I was riding more like a tour than a race. Passed a couple of Amish or Mennonite families in their carriages. I waved and they all waved back which was fun. Transition 2
Comments: The only thing I did reasonably well all day; 11th in age group and 70th overall. Run
Comments: I have no idea why I was so slow. Last week at Lake George, I did the run portion in 57:38. My legs felt fine coming off the bike, and my nausea had completely passed, so I don't know what happened. The run was very flat which I don't really like, but that shouldn't have slowed me down. I guess I was just having a bad day. My wife and 10 yo son got to the race when I was starting the second loop, so that was real nice. BTW, at one of the drink stations, I got some HEED instead of water by mistake; YUCK!! Do people really drink that stuff? I normally drink only water during a run, and I really didn't like that HEED stuff. What would you do differently?: Run faster. Post race
Warm down: Walked, drank lots of water, and ate. What limited your ability to perform faster: Ear plugs, overall fatigue, I'm slow, and most importantly, I don't train enough. Event comments: This was a great race. Well organized, lots of enthusiastic and smiling volunteers, really good food, and a very pretty venue. Last updated: 2006-09-07 12:00 AM

I didn't do as well as I would like, and I think this is where it started. A long story, so you probably want to skip it. I did this race because it is near Rochester where my oldest son has just started college at RIT, and he said there's a triathlon near here, you should come and do it. I figured it was his way of saying he would like a visit, and we wanted to visit him. Worked til 3 on Saturday, then drove 4 hours to Rochester with my wife and 10 yo son. Took him out to dinner and hung out at the dorm and met his new friends and had a good time. Got to the motel about 11 and found I had mistakenly booked the wrong motel, about a mile from race instead of a couple blocks. Slept poorly and woke up at 4 and couldn't get back to sleep. Had my protein shake with berries and cream 2 hours before race time like I always do which turned out to be the highlight of my pre race. Drove to the race, signed in, got marked, left my transition bag and drove back to motel to write down directions for my wife. Can't find my motel key so I had to wake up my wife so I felt bad.(found the key later stuck in my wallet with my USAT card) Rode my bike back to the race, stopped at a red light and thought of all the BT'ers who said they fell at intersections with clipless pedals, so naturally, I fell (there are no traffic lights where I ride). Felt tired so I thought I should have some caffeine, but I don't like coffe, so I had some "Jolt" gum, which I rarely do (this comes into play later). Recognized Marmadaddy from his BT tri suit, but he looked busy so I didn't want to bother him. Said hello to him later in the swim corral, and he was very gracious.
Just the ride from motel to the race site. I forgot to actually warm up which was not smart.
