Pre-race routine:

One hour drive for this 3pm start so no early rise. Got there in good time, set up my stuff, measured the distance from the water to my bike (100m) and to the bike exit (50m)

Weather was really hot so I was wondering if I should wear my wetsuit. Decided not to after testing the water, which was pretty warm. However, the weather turned a little colder shortly after that (a cloud passing by , dropping a few drops of rain) and I started to get cold so changed my mind and went with wetsuit.
Event warmup:

Not much, walking around, light stretch, couple of strokes
Swim
  • 07m
  • 351 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

In the water for about 3 minutes before my start (last wave), I was glad I opted for the suit. It was not that warm after all.

Good swim, focus on technique, nice and easy. 1:58/100 (goal tempo 2:08 so very happy with that)
Transition 1
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

100m run to my bike. Had problems finding my zip so had to slow down, probably lost few seconds there.
Once at my rack, everything went well, smooth removal of suit, perfect jump on the bike and into my cycling shoes already clipped.

5th time overall, 1st in my category
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing before a race
Bike
  • 34m 2s
  • 17 kms
  • 29.97 km/hr
Comments:

A fun course, lots of small hills and small descents.

Goals was to average 30k/h and I pretty much nailed that. Happy.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Another sub part T2 after last week’s but the idiot on the other side of my rack had put his bike in the middle of it (he’d already did that before the race but I had moved it to his side) and I had to slide it out of the way to make room for mine. Lots of swearing.

Also, no sense of urgency putting my shoes on, I can do better..

Run
  • 22m 51s
  • 4.2 kms
  • 05m 26s  min/km
Comments:

Plan was to keep around 5:30/km, which I managed to do, pleased with that too, especially as there was some tricky parts in the forest where I slowed down a lot in fear of stumbling or sprain an ankle

Was able to push a little everytime I noticed I was slowing down. The finish line was in the stadium so very fast finish
What would you do differently?:

Nothing on this race but last year I ran at 5:15 minutes/km or better (later in the season). I’d really like to go back to this.

Post race
Warm down:

As we started in waves, 5 minutes apart, I had no idea how I had placed until I checked the live results and saw that I had won. Icing on the cake :)

They waited for the last participant to cross the finish line to have the medal ceremony, which I thought was great, even if it meant waiting around for over an hour.

Won a hotel night in a local luxury hotel and my name (wrongly spellt) on the “cup” (a really nice glass vase). Whomever wins 3 times gets to keep it. Challenge accepted!

Event comments:

Really well organised small village race. One of the best I’ve done.
