Swim
Comments: Ok swim. Everything I have read says that you really should pace yourself on the swim. Every race that I have ignored this hasn't ended up being a problem later on. So this time I pace myself. I didn't even get in the front row for the swim. So the first 500 yds was terrible. I got so beat up. There were probably 10-15 of us right on top of each other at the same speed. I also drank alot of Choptank water. I tried to look at my HR monitor but couldn't read a thing. I thought I saw 155 at the turnaround so I slowed down to around IM pace. This was so comfortable. It was like I was on a leisurely swim. I saw a couple of caps from the wave behind me at the end and I now know that loafing is stupid. I should have been 2-3 mins faster. My avg HR was 147, it should have been around 155. Oh well. What would you do differently?: Speed-up! Transition 1
Comments: First bad thing was I forgot my sunglasses so I had to go in my transition bag to get them out. Then the lady in transition was yelling "ladies wear your race number!!" so I grabbed it like I always do before the run. But you can't put your race number on during the bike like you can while running. So I was just about at the end of transition carrying my sunglasses, race belt and bike and I dropped my bike. When I tried to stop it from falling I ended up catching the big ring on my leg and sliced it with a bunch of smaller cuts from the chain on the small ring. I didn't notice this until a few miles into the bike luckily. Though I was so excited to hear all of the "OOOHHHH" and "AHHH" when I dropped my bike. 13th in AG. What would you do differently?: Put the race belt on before I left transition. Bike
Comments: Not sure what happened here. The first 5 miles I was focused on trying to get the race belt on and out of my hands. I ended up putting one of the buckles in my shorts and then the other buckle near it in the shorts and then trying to snap it with one hand without crashing. No crashing! Yay! The first hr or so was the perfect effort, though I was really trying to get the HR down. I averaged 20.3 mph. Then somewhere in the middle I was so concerned with my HR (even though my legs felt great) so I slowed down. And then when I got to the headwind I slowed down even more. My HR was in the low 140s and mentally I was loafing. Grr! Calories were ok. Probably a little on the low side. The stomach was feeling kinda bad. A couple of times I thought about puking. I am pretty sure it was from the water I drank in the swim. What would you do differently?: Keep the mental effort up the entire time. Transition 2
Comments: A better transition than the first one. Though I forgot where my rack was and ran around for 30 secs lost. Sat down in transition and inspected the leg a bit. Nasty looking, but nothing terrible. There was more blood than cut if that makes any sense. 18th in AG. What would you do differently?: Focus on rack location. Run
Comments: Legs felt great by mile .5. No HR issues on this run. I held 9-9:30 miles for the first 8 or so miles. Then the wheels fell off. But not from having trouble getting the HR up like my first 2 halves, but from my legs dying on me. My knees felt terrible. They just hurt. But the run overall was a great one for me. 2:08 is a PR by 3 minutes and I was strong mentally. The last 4 miles really hurt but I told myself that I WAS ONLY ALLOWED TO WALK the aid stations. The other halves ended with alot of walking. This discipline paid off. Passing Maj Rozelle while he was being interviewed by a tv van at mile 11 helped me keep focused on the task at hand. I didn't think goosebumps were possible while racing, but I had them! It was great seeing everybody on the run! Calories: Probably a bit low. 2 gels and 6 or so partially drank cups of gatorade aren't enough. What would you do differently?: I need to be more vigilant on my long runs. They are the most important workout of the week for me! Post race
Warm down: Medical tent to get the leg looked at. I felt dizzy afterwards. I really needed calories. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mental training I guess. I think way too much. Maybe I should race without any gadgets :) The bike makes no sense. I have put the miles in, but rode faster at Diamondman. It is a B race and I need to keep an eye on the prize, IM LP! Event comments: This is a great race! I really liked the run course. You get to see alot of people and lots of different things to look at. Though I still think the music in the cemetary was a bit weird. Last updated: 2006-09-10 12:00 AM

Woke up at 445 at the dctriclub house. Talked to Rachel while I ate my breakfast then quickly headed out. I drove 80 mph down the road to Cambridge (guess I was ready to race!) and entered the park 10 mins after I left. The house was west of cambridge so it was an easy drive making the left turn into the park instead of the right turn like 99% of the people.
I set up my transition area quickly and talked to Dave, Glenn, Oceanannie, Jean, Ernie, and a few others. We left the area at 7 and watched the pros come in. I hung out with Jason and Dave until they left on their wave. By this point I had to go to the bathroom SO bad that I wanted to die. I couldn't wait for my wave to be called. I did time it. I went to the bathroom for over 2 minutes in the water! Holy cow!
Ha! None.
