Pre-race routine:

late race start time -10 am so got up around 7..was out of all my favorites (!) so went to local grocery for my hazlenut, some yogurt, & a cinnamon bun (yum!)
Event warmup:

none- had to register-get marked-go back to parking lot & get stuff-hit the bathroom- find a spot to leave my stuff..mess around with wetsuit (why are they so hard to zip !)chatted a bit with those around me & it was time to head to the beach
Swim
  • 44m 21s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

One big wave start in to the ocean as the tide is about to come in is NOT my idea of a good time. Saw only 2 kayaks & the harbormaster boat for the whole course..The tide was coming in and it was wavy with natural & boat traffic..and as you got to the buoy+boat to round & come back in the tide/current was strong enough to make you think "You just can't get there from here"...Lots of energy to get around the bow of the boat & head back- and the angle of the incoming tide was not so as to push you where you needed to go- but sideways so you had to correct for that..I was one HAPPY girl to get out of that water & move ON! (cut my foot too)
What would you do differently?:

Swim like an actual swimmer/triathlete instead of surviving...
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No race issued caps- so used my little lycra pool cap-
Transition area was up a concrete ramp, over sand, down a sidewalk, and a grassy area between that and the actual exit road with speedbumps...

T1 included in bike time
What would you do differently?:

water shoes..and get to site earlier- it was open racking with not enough racks..I racked leaning against a chain link fence at the far end ...
Bike
  • 1h 24m 18s
  • 24.3 miles
  • 17.30 mile/hr
Comments:

Course itself is nice- need more volunteers & marking. There was a pretty good head wind for a lot of the mid point flat to roller part of the course..
What would you do differently?:

Dropped my gel..not do that.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Again- racking & transition were not the best at this venue..decided to skip the grass & go around a little longer on walkway to get back to my FAR end of transition spot..when I got off the bike got a MAJOR cramp in my right quad- had to get right down into like a duck squat kinda thing to try & relieve it- each time I would try to straighten up it would feel worse- finally stood up while folding my leg up under me major stretch and then got my shoe on & hobbled off..threw me off a bit- forgot gel only had a sip of drink..but fortunately altho sore did let up so I was eventually able to run
What would you do differently?:

I have neglected the nutrition/hydration aspect for too long..can get away with it in a sprint, but not this
Run
  • 52m 28s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

After the leg cramp subsided took a little bit to get a rhythm but overall the run didn't feel half bad- tried to pace the first half a bit slower than I "felt" like going so as not to run out of gas..They only had water at beginning & halfway point- and no mile markers at all..As came to the finish mentally had another runner right in front of me and I didn't try & sprint past her..not like me...
What would you do differently?:

Sprint at the end- mentally - I dunno - think I was missin the BT LOVE..!!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a bit- NO WATER at finish! WHAT"S up with that!!!Went back to my bike for 1/2 a warm water bottle..grabbed an apple..broke down transition so I could get my sweatshirt from the car & something salty..
Saw TriFury Mark-he had a GREAT race-think he was 4th or 5th overall guy..caught a glimpse of Jorge (surrounded by ladies!)..who won a relay award..chatted with a few racers..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Talent , skill, youth,
training-nutrition-
No BT love!!

I had a good day & enjoyed myself-but.... my heart was at Firmman

Event comments:

This race has improved (year 3) but has room for more-it is a lovely venue-oceanside park-and nice run/bike courses.. needs to polish up a bit..get more "professional" .chip timing would be huge..more support/volunteers/course marking & water stops..better transition area-with assigned spaces & enough of them- and swim caps & not run out of tshirts/water ...but despite these things, it IS a nice race!!

Couple of RR crossings..Few rolling hills -only 2 regular "hills"..Scenic pretty loop for the most part..thru a couple of congested areas..1 bottle exchange.Only 2 of the intersections had police..there were at least 3 other spots that really needed traffic control. No mile markings.
