Pre-race routine:

Eat grape nuts with soy milk, have coffee, check over gear bag. leave to go to race.
Event warmup:

didn't get a chance to warm up. Was too busy chatting with friends.
Swim
  • 1h 25m
  • 3500 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

You have to carry your running shoes with you when you swim. I stuff one in the front of my shorts and one in the back with the heels pointing down. The key is to cover the shoe completely to minimize drag.
What would you do differently?:

My goggles fogged pretty badly, so even though navigation was easy I couldn't see. I would spit in goggles to keep from fogging up.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1- is really not applicable. Plus I didn't do splits on my watch for the transitions. So the time is built into my swim time.
Bike
  • 2h 02m
  • 30 miles
  • 14.75 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike is first so everyone goes easy to warm up. The race really doesn't start until you finish the bike and head out on the first run.
What would you do differently?:

Need more training on hill climbing. I was 1 minute slower than last year when I did this race with a triple chainring. But I hit the 20 mile mark faster and was less spent at the top of the climb...so that does mean I am in better shape, I just need to work on hill repeats.
Transition 2

Run
  • 3h 50m
  • 19 miles
  • 12m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

The runs are hilly and all on carriage trails that have a lot of babyhead rocks and loose rocks. Footing is tough and you have to be present all the time. The last run has a hill called "Godzilla" it is 1 mile long and after 18 miles it is a very hard climb.
What would you do differently?:

More training. I had only run about 12-13 miles and that is exactly where my legs craped out on me as well as my endurance and mental ability. I kept up with my nutriton because that is all I could control at that point.
Post race
Warm down:

none

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training. Need to run more.

Event comments:

This is a very unique triathlon and really showcases the area. I am lucky that it is in my back yard! http://www.ulster.net/~sosnyta/course.html

Performance: Good
This is a tough race to fill in because the swim segments are broken up by trail runs. So I have added up all three swims and that is the time shown here. Also this race does not seperate the transitions, so those are packaged in with my swim times. Cramping is a huge problem with this race because the water is so cold. This is the first race I did cramp up in so my transitions are long because I had to work out the cramps before I could run.
Suit: none
Course: The first swim is 1.1 miles in COLD 64 degree water! The second swim is .5 miles and the last is a little under .5. each lake gets progressivly warmer as you race. Navigation is very easy as thre are kyaks and buoys ever 50 yards.
