Pre-race routine:

so i set all my kit out last night and washed my trainers and cleaned my rather stinky orthotics ready for my first ever road race today (well it was in a park but you get the idea!). set my alarm for 10am so i could get up in time to shower, eat and such like; was a bit apprehensive as i only usually run after cycling home from uni so a) have no idea how to warm up without having ridden first and b) have no idea what to eat or not eat for a morning run

10am alarm goes off, saph turns over, turns it off and goes back to sleep - too tired and too stressed to run (the lovely mice are back so i'm all worried about them...bloody housemate leaving uneaten food in his bedroom - grrr!!!!)

wake up naturally later - 11.40 to discover that i've accidentally pressed the daylight saving time button on my alarm clock and its actually only 10.40 - just enough time for me to grab my kit and get to the park for the run - bugger! grab some dried fruit, ata a banana and take a sports drink with me. i know its not enough but i don't want to get stitch or puke.

Event warmup:

so make it to the park in time, pays my 2 pounds (i love being a student) and go and do a rather half hearted warm up; stretch off and have a gel ten mins before it starts. immediate thoughts going into this were - i hope to beat 35 mins, how the fuck do you warm up without having been on a bike first?!?, and i guess my pre-race nutrition leaves a lot to be desired - lol!

Comments:

start off nice and steady, taking in water as and when, and liberally dowsing myself in it to try and cool down. it was actually quite a muggy day and i get hot very easily! paced myself well for the first 3k, averaging about 6 mins 45 per k which i was pleased with. a mate from swimming was within sight for the first k or so but she beat me by a good 3 mins - well done fi but the lady behing me who seemed to be breathing more erratically than i've ever managed soon vanished...thank feck. got passed by all the fast peeps - fastest man came in in about 16 mins i think, and fastest woman just over 20mins.

the route is 3 laps round the park and is a lovely route though a bit slidey with the fallen leaves and the earlier rain. anyhow....i took it easy the first 3 and a bit k's staying at conversation pace, checked out by thanking volunteers and such like. then started getting a wee bit faster and pushing it just before the 4k marker, and then the last probably .5k i really upped the pace and 'sprinted' home - my lungs were going to explode! i really noticed that my legs felt like jelly that last bit - probabaly due to an almost non-existent breakfast and lack of practice. felt pleased (ish) with my time (my last accidental 5k was 33m 05 secs but that was a brick and in the afternoon and the time was worked out after the whole run...ie may be accurate, may not be) but was a bit embarrassed by my mates being so encouraging - i would rather have been a bit more anonymous.

What would you do differently?:

have learnt a few lessons - i need to sort my nutrition out and next time i'm cycling down there - this running on its own lark is too wierd

Post race
Warm down:

walked some and stretched off; drank the free water and ate my free banana. watched the awards ceremony and then drove to b&q to get mice killer!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my ability to get out of bed on time ;) nutrition/warm up.

being a member of the slow buggers running club?

Event comments:
