Swim
Comments: Wave 15. Second to the last wave. I love the back of the pack! Fewer people to run over me. Nearly no pressure. It's all for fun. I almost missed my wave because I was joking with the announcer. Most of my wave was at the pier and I asked the announcer, "um, which wave is that?" and he said "yours." Poop! Quick swim to the start. No time to notice that the water was freaking COLD! Good thing. Don't overthink. Tom joined me which was cool. How many people get a personal escort? I forgot to start my watch. Like that's news! :) I spent about a minute trying to clear the last entry and start the time while swimming. I was able to pass a few people on the swim, which happily shocked me! That's always good for the ego. The swim went really well. The water really wasn't THAT gross or THAT long or THAT cold. Ok it really was cold but not after I got moving. I swam way up on the shore to avoid trudging through chest-high water this year. This was a really good idea. I'll do that again. I cut about 10 minutes off my time from last year when I freaked in the water. Excellent! What would you do differently?: Swim faster and remember to start my watch. Transition 1
Comments: I don't know the time. They stuck it somewhere else. I'm really slow in T1. I like to walk to get my breathing and HR slowed. All my swim stuff came off quickly and the bike stuff went on well. No way on God's Green Earth can I run with my bike. I'm always amazed that others can do this. Maybe I should make it a goal. Bike
Comments: I'm so glad that I've finally worked out drinking on the bike. Last year I had to pull over. That kinda sucked last year. Way, way better this year. I enjoyed the course a lot more this year. It was a bit windy around Fiesta Island and it seemed it was always a headwind. Go figure. I slowed down to watch a water skier b/c it looked like he was going to jump off a ramp and that would have been SO COOL! He didn't but I watched anyway. And another water skier who was pulled by a Jet Ski bit it into the water. It looked like it hurt. Joked with the volunteers b/c they're always very supportive and cheering. It's cool to make them smile. I passed a coupla people on the way back. I love the BOP. Everyone's friendly and smiles and does that head nod thing. What would you do differently?: Request an upgrade on my legs. They don't pedal fast enough. Transition 2
Comments: Um, riding with feet on top of shoes? Jumping off a moving bike? Is that safe? I can't do that, but I can drink on the bike without dropping my bottle. Another goal for next year. What would you do differently?: nothin' different. All went well. Someone squished a gel on my towel, but it didn't get on any of my stuff. Run
Comments: I love the first part of this run and the last part. I'm not a big fan of the middle part under the bridge. It's in the dirt, so it should be my shin's favorite part, but that's where the camera guy sets up and he doesn't ever smile. I think he's broken. I liked the run. Faster pace than last year by about 2 in/mile. Very very very cool. I saw a guy with knee braces going up the bridge. He was alternating walk/run up the hill. If he's digging that deep to run with knee braces, I can run my sorry butt up the bridge. As I came up next to him I joked that I didn't sign up for a hill. He laughed. That was good. I love it when people show their heart. Going down the other side of the bridge, someone who was finished and leaving told another person, "hey, there's a beer garden at the end." a beer garden?! That's different. I picked up my pace. I saw Tom and a few of his friends along the final stretch and he yelled" sprint!" I thought I was but picked it up a bit more anyway. There was the promise of beer at the end. What would you do differently?: Shave another minute or so off my pace. Actually find the beer garden next time. Post race
Warm down: Um, bathroom. Food tent. 2 bottles of water, 2 brownies, a small blueberry muffin and a banana. Gotta maintain my Athena status. :) What limited your ability to perform faster: I feel that the fatness of my muscles inhibited the fastness of my bones. Maybe I shoulda had a bran muffin not blueberry? Still excellent of my fat legs to come through for me with a faster time this year! :) Event comments: I love this race. If I'd had anything left in my legs, I would have gone on the jumper after the race. Hung out for the awards. It seems that I know lots of people who get awards. I received 3rd in my category. They called it Clyde women under 40. Excellent way to spend Sunday morning. Worth the 4am wake up call. Last updated: 2006-10-04 12:00 AM

We rushed to Mission Bay to find parking, and I was about 2 hours early for the race. Dropped off my bike Saturday. I love that option. Set up my stuff, chatted with my rack-mates. I was next to an 80YO woman who was racing MB for her 3rd time. All smiles. She was very cool. She raced in a rasher shirt and swim suit. She's the MAN!
A million bathroom trips. I'm considering a private stall next year.
Watched the fast people in the 1st 3 waves exit the water. There were a few teenage boys-fast,fast,fast. I saw 1 challenged athlete exit. Very cool.
Wandered to the swim entry chatting along the way, of course. Watched a few waves and tried to convince myself that the bay water wasn't THAT gross and the swim wasn't THAT long. And the water wouldn't be THAT cold. Denial is a good place for me to visit before the swim.
If I had to wait any longer, I'd have needed to go to the bathroom again. Too late, the wetsuit was on and it's not coming off til T1.
Saw Tom. As always, super supportive. He wasn't sure if he could swim with me or if another wave would need a swim buddy. I didn't need a swim buddy, but I like to swim with him.
