Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45 got dressed in many layers. Had breakfast with ABQKid and his sister-in-law. Gathered our things and waited to load the hotel shuttle to the start line.
Event warmup:

It was cold. Everything I had brought for my after race bag, I think I wore with the exception of my jacket. Got to race site and stood around with ABQKid his S-I-L, Pilgrim and Mrs. Pilgrim talking and trying to stay warm. Checked in our bags and headed for the porta potty. Stood in line at the porta potty forever and finally gave up when we had 5 minutes until the start. Went to my corral and found ABQKid and his S-I-L some how. Gun went off and we started moving forward.

Comments:

This was my first marathon and I can say that it was tougher than I would have guessed. The cold didn't really bother me, as we are used to running in cold weather, but for some reason this run was tough from the beginning. At about mile 2 or 3 my hip started hurting and I knew I would be in for a long day. ABQKid and I found the 4 hour pacers and just stayed with them even though every time they changed pacers the pace would change dramatically. I stayed with them and ABQKid until the 17 Mile point and then I had to slow down because my legs were hurting to much. I didn't start walking until the 20 mile mark. From 20 on I was doing a run couple of minutes walk couple of minutes to keep my calves from cramping it was really weird. All the bands were really good and having a lot of people around was a great motivator.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Train more maybe. I felt my nutrition was good and I drank enough, so I can't explain the body shut down...so early anyway.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the finish line and right behind me was ABQKid's S-I-L so we got shuffled through the different lines. Saw ABQKid and our buddy waiting for us so we went with them to find the others in our group.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Genes...I'm not a fast runner, but usually I can keep going. First time I had my legs hurt that way, never hurt in my 18, 20, 22 mile training runs so that was something that I didn't see coming at mile 17.

Event comments:

Very well put on race. Even with the slow second half, I had a good time and was happy to complete my first marathon. I know I won't underestimate any marathon again and am looking forward to completing another one.
