Swim
Comments: After warming up in the lake on Saturday I felt like crap getting out of the water. I lost my balance and fell on the rocks, twisted ankle and cut up my foot, forearm and hand. Not sure what happened! I'm guessing some combination of the head cold I had, cold water, and maybe equilibrium loss due to water in ears?? I just don't know, but I felt horrible. I had no balance and was very dizzy. After warming up before the even start on Sunday morning I started to feel the same way, and made the decision to skip the swim. I went to transition and waited until my expected time for the swim and started the bike. What would you do differently?: There wasn't much I could do abou the balance equilibrium thing. I need to find out what happened (if possible) because this was not something I could have just fought through. I can deel with pain or an injury, but this was different. I didn't want to end up in the middle of the lake with my head spinning and no balance like I had the day before. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: Parts of the course were very rough and definately slowed me down. I also had to stop and tighten my computer, as it was ready to fall off. The head and cross winds were pretty bad for at least half of the course. What would you do differently?: Try not to fall into lulls in effort. After some difficult climbs or hard pushes I tend to get into a lull and slow down. Also need to work on speed and power in general. Transition 2
Run
Comments: I was very tired and sore to start the run. My lower back felt like I had a vice on it. Felt a little better once I warmed up, but still did not have a great run. Post race
Warm down: Rested for a few minutes, had some fruit and cytomax. What limited your ability to perform faster: Issues related to swimming (vertigo, dizzy or whatever) Lack of preparation for bike distance, and pain and fatigue by the time I started the run. Event comments: Good race and decent organization. I was disappointed that I had to skip the swim. This was the last race of the season, and I am heading into the off season with doubts about the swim. After overcoming my open water swim issues in my first race, I now have a new problem. Also, it is unpredictable and not something I can just fight through. I did some research and I am thinking I had vertigo. I will continue to research and test my response to open water swim in cold water and will wear ear plugs to keep the cold water out of my ears. Last updated: 2006-10-13 12:00 AM

Got out of bed around 4AM to drink a protein shake. Woke up at 5:30, ate some otameal, showered, ate some cheerios, then headed down to set up transition. Drank some Cytomax while warming up.
Ran for about 5-10 minutes and stretched. Swam about 400-500m and started feeling like I did the previous day, dizzy, off balance, etc. I could not navigate well and felt dizzy.
