Pre-race routine:

Drove up Friday with Yoshi. Was able to drive the bike course. We unloaded where were staying. Picked packet and shopped decided to have dinner there. Good meal. Met up with a gentleman from St Crouix the island. He was nice and had a big appitite. Me up with Kam and fam. They sat with us. Visited the transition area. I had a lane with big ruts and lots of sharp pine cones. Oriented to area. Picked up a bushel of pine cones cos I'd be the one to step on one and fall. Headed back to house. Took a nice walk down by the Raquett River. Watched a little TV and went to bed at 11:15 or so. Slept well for a race night.

Woke up at 5:30 and ate cereal and energy bar. Water. Laid back down till 6:15. Yoshi and I left the house at 6:30 after a sufficient amount of rstock stops. Body marked and chipped. Picked up more pinecones. Set up transisiton and went back out to hang with Y and survey the swim and stuff. Had some caffinated gel. Should haved stopped for coffee.

I have to thanks Yoshi for helping me a lot to stay calm and remeber all I needed. She is a great pitcrew and Cheerleader.
Event warmup:

Ran a 1/2 mile or so. Wanted to get the blood moving. Met up with Mike, Kam and a new freind. Peed a little and drank some water. Got into wetsuit and moved to corral. Stretched arms and warmed them up. We were the 5 wave so only got small swim.

Had mtimofeef words in the back of my mind. Easy on the swim, save a little for the bike and run. Started front center. As more people learn what a bad place that is the more I like it. Swam hard first 200yds. Then long and lean. Let the legs trail for the most part. Set my own pace. Kept catching another one from my wave on my breath still didn't race. I need to offer some advice to all RD's don't use orange caps if the bouey's are orange. I started to catch the wave ahead before the turn for the Oly. It was hard to navigate in a sea of orange caps. I kept getting to the inside of the bouy's and a had to turn hard to correct. Hit most alright through. Hit the turn well and headed home. Passed a lot of the wave ahead of us and lots of other colors. Swam all the way to shore almost. The lake was dirty and hard to see more then a foot or two. Hit the shore with good energy even more when the little white cowbell sounded and Yoshi cheered for me.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get in the wave ahead of the orange caps.

I know 4-1/2 minutes Got out of suit well. I like socks and gloves and stuff. I dried and put jersey one. I don't find it takes that much time and can preload it with gel and stuff. The socks on the wet feet hurt the most. Got to wave at Yoshi and Phil. They followed me from the swim finish. Got ready and wanted to make sure I had everything. 56 miles you know. At the bike out you had to cross traffic. The cops had a stop Rt 3 traffic. I guess I just made it across as Yoshi said the lady behind me had to wait and was having a fit. I didn't kick too hard on swim which help not fall down this time.
What would you do differently?:

Get a bucket.

Comments:

-The problem with out and back is the cars are squished in the middle. For the most part the traffic was courtesy. When it did back up it was hard to pass.
-I got lucky on the out and didn't know it. Clipped in like I knew what I was doing. New cleats must of helped. I got to pass someone right off the bat. He dropped his glove and turned to get it. Haha. One down 400 to go.
-Mile out OUCH. There is an ambulance and a biker being loaded in. Couldn't figured out what happened. The bike didn't look bad except for the missing back wheel. Hope she is OK.
-Hit the big hill out. GREAT couldn' get into the big ring in the back. My favorite gear. The cross over. I say oh well puts me into the small ring sooner better candance. Still able to manage the first hill. Hit the top and Hammered the gel and water on bike. Then it's roller city.
-Yoshi passed me on her way home. Told me I was in the top ten in the swim for AG and get my ass in gear. She didn't get out in time to see me go by the driveway and Sue was confused on which biker was me.
-Had tailwind most the way out. I would pass on the way down and they would pass on the way up. Met one guy, we were playing leap frog.
-Couple tech bikes went by and looked at the Torpado funny. I love my bike. I do love passing carbon fiber too. I hate the sound of disc wheels coming up behind me.
-20 miles out I came up on a lass who was shooting a snot rocket out the right side. She apologized and I said it was OK as long as it wasn't the left side.
-My leap frog buddy went by I guess he stopped for coffee. He told me he went to lunch. I had a some water and gel at stops. Didn't stop except at the turn around to pee.
-Met up with a very nice pinky type person talk a little bit She reported it was time to be at the end since the small hills were starting to hurt. Frogger passed me for the last time.
-Max speed 45.5 mph and drifted into transition feeling good. Thought hard about pulling feet out ahead of time. Thought better.
-No Yoshi. Sure she is having a well deserved nap.
-Ride was good and hope to make it in under 3:15, I'll take 3:06.
What would you do differently?:

Little ride before to make sure that gearing works.

Had to pee or thought I did. Figured I better drink a little more. I was thinking I've never run 10 miles let alone 13 miles let alone 13.1. Changed my jersey, socks and shoes. Watered and peed (or tried). Stretceh my calves and quads. Looked for Y. Saw Kam and fam on the way out. Dam it she was sucking a cold drink and I had 13 miles to go. Thanks for cheering me on.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Maybe remember I'm in a race.
Remember my race belt and number!! Idiot I am a mile out oops. Not going to turn around to get it. Little preocuppied with it.

OMG OMG I have no idea how far 13 miles is let alone on foot.
-Started with a run after all, all those people cheering for me. Ran about a half mile. The shins were yelling at me the whole way. They did loosen up.
-At a mile I thought OMG I forgot my bib#. I should have said forget it. I didn't kept looking and checking others or bibs they were smart enough to remember them.
-Pretty quiet in the run for the first 5 miles. I was clicking them off. Running got better.
-I walked/ran running a little more then I thought I would. I was playing leap frogs with a girl fighting a ITB problem and guy with leg cramps. For some reason looking back I need to open up my run more. I hold back little for some reason.
-The rest stops were great. Close to BT quality. Almost anything you wanted. All of them had a good cheering squad. I thanked everyone I could.
-Mile six there was Yoshi cheering me and taking pictures even got one of Mike from last night. Thanks Y.
-Around mile 8 I felt a little funny. Kinda fuzzy in the head. I walked for a while and realized that I finally had to pee. The next porta potty was a mile away. I was very pleased to see it. Got some water, banana and gel. Felt better and kinda knew I could make it from there.
-Though the woods to grandmother's house. It was trail run in a dark forest. Cool and a little errie, since noone was close at all. then out to the light and black top.
-Little after that I hear "hey Dud do you want a ride" Kam and fam driving by and cheering me on. Thanks.
-Met up with an older gentleman and we talked last mile back. Sorry I had to sprint to the finish ahead of him.
-Yoshi cheered me in and took picures.
What would you do differently?:

Train more run. Still pleased with results as I was thinking 3 hours. I'm putting down good for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and looked for water. None at finish line. Found water and coke at food tent. Found Yoshi. To say the least I was a little teary eye when I saw her. Never thought I could do this. I know she helped a lot and I'm extremely lucky to have her in my corner. Walked around a little, wished the lake was cold so I could stand in it to cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of run training and shin pain.
Loose some wgt.
Lighter bike.
Slow transitions.
Mental mistake not to have bib on.
Drink a little more on run.

Event comments:

-Funny thing the finishing metals contain distances for the Oly. If it wasn't my first HIM i say OK may take it somewhere to fix it or engrave the right in the back. T-shirts are right. I was hoping for a tech shirt but cotton.
-Pre and post race food was good.
-Volunteers were highest quality.
-The bike out is a little funny but probably the only way to deal with it. I got lucky but feel sorry for those who got caught.
-Orange caps need to be rethought.
-Town happy to have us.
-Thank you Yoshi for being my coach, cheering squad and wife. I love you.

Hey stats recorded it at avg 18mph so I did too. Forgive me for the 13 seconds. I like to see that 18mph instead of 17.98. Kam if you are bothered by it I'll fix it.

Course: Up hill to start. 1/4 mile was on dirt raod under construction. Out and around and back to another out and around and back. gentle flats up and down. Through nieghborhoods and a ATV trail that really hadn't seen an ATV lately. Rest stops every 1.5 miles or so.
