Pre-race routine:

Headed to the Bear's (cave) the night before, had pasta, pizza and visited for a while. It was nice. I knocked my head really hard getting into bed. The BearKids have a wooden bunk bed and well, I wasn't paying attention as I got into it. No, a BearKid was not in the bed.

Woke up, talked to Aaron to wish him luck at IMFL, had a PB sandwich, then Bear and I were on our way to meet Bill and family at the race site.
Event warmup:

Hit the porta-potties, stood around, then we ran back to the car so I could leave my pants there.

Was planning on taking this as an easy, convo pace, training run. Bear wanted to actually run and left Bill and I to slack off on our own. We agreed to run at a 10 min. mile pace, easy for both of us. Within 1/2 a mile, my legs were hurting. I was wearing a Triks running skirt that I hadn't worn before...I have worn my other one to run in many times and didn't think this one would be different. I told Bill I was starting to chafe and it didn't look good.
Mile 1: 9:22, HR 161

Hit the water stop a little after mile 1. Walked it, inspected legs (not too bad) and then ran again. We chatted the whole race, everything under the sun. Have I said before what amazing friends I have? Anyway, I was hoping that this is "only" 6 miles and the chafing wouldn't get bad. Boy was I wrong...
Mile 2: 9:16 (includes walking), HR 177

I mentioned to Bill that my HR was crazy high. I am really out of shape. Miles 4-6 weren't going to be fun, but I would be fine, its only 6 miles. My legs were really, really hurting by now. I walked for a minute again somewhere in here and told Bill he might have to leave me. It hurt to run, hurt more to walk. (My cousin said later, after inspecting the chafing, that I should have quit? What?) We kept on trucking.
Mile 3: 9:30, HR 179

By this time I was really hating myself for my choice in bottoms. I was getting a little tired and knew I could hold the pace or go faster for the last 2 miles, but my legs were burning a fire like I've never felt before. Walked a little longer (2 minutes) at the second water stop and b*tched some more.
Mile 4: 10:00, HR 179

Was telling Bill more that I didn't feel that out of shape but my HR this week has been high on all my runs. I must be. I told Bill again to go on, I was feeling like crap, but we were still having fun. Does anyone else make fun of other people racing to make yourself feel better?

As my Garmin hit the mile 5 marker, I was not happy. Mile 5: 9:12. I yell "BASTARD!" We were supposed to be slowing down, but we had sped up! Fastest mile of the day, and Bill had turned into my pacer and dammit, that was not cool. HR: 181. Bill thought it was hysterical, I did not.

I was fine, but my legs again, were in a lot of pain. Just a mile to go. This is the least interesting part of the course, just looping around to the finish straightaway.
Mile 6: 9:34, HR 183

Bills daughter Hanna jumped in at the end to finish with him. I was going to drop back, I did for a second, but my legs burned more to go slower. Tried to stay off to the side so I wouldn't ruin their finish picture.

What would you do differently?:

What wouldn't I do differently?!
1. not wear that skirt. Its just a lounge, around town errands skirt now.
2. TRAIN! My HR was WAY too high for that amount of effort, but my muscles felt good.

Great to run with friends, good time otherwise.
Post race
Warm down:

Complained, looked for some Neosporin or Vaseline but couldn't find any. Found the beer truck/taps pretty quickly though. I improvised and found a big cooler with canned beer. I stuck one in between my legs and it felt WONDERFUL! Walked around like that for a while... Had 1, it was more than enough and got some jambalaya and talked with Bear.

The post race festivities at this race are some of the best I've ever been too and its why I came back to do it again. Bands, tents, beer, good food, you name it. Nothing I can think of that they overlook.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My choice in race day attire. Lazyness.

Event comments:

They could use more than 2 water stops. Thats my only complaint as we get spoiled with water stops every mile in tri's.
