Pre-race routine:

Nothing special, just made sure I was hydrated. Then checked on my wife to see if she still wanted to go. I don't blame her for staying under the goose feathered comforter.
Event warmup:

Made my way towards packet pickup to look for BTers. All of a sudden I hear "Rob!!", ok there's Jess and Jeff. Got packets and tried to stay warm. Back to the cars to drop off what wasn't needed. Made our way to the start line while looking for Rich and Betsy. Jess did her part by scaring off one racer, or atleast giving him a story to tell his friends. "You should have seen this crazy lady that came up to me yelling..." Betsy found us soon after. Then an announcement that the 5K was starting soon.

Comments:

I drank alittle too much before getting to the race and didn't realize it until the race started. It was cold out but started to warm up as we turned from the paved road onto the dirt road. This is what I was expecting for the rest of the race. Then I see a ladder in the path and markers for us to turn. Here was a surprise. The course turned to a descent with lots of roots and uneven footing. Once we reached the bottom I rolled my left ankle as I tried to turn left. From the decent on there was a lot of branch dodging, and arms/legs gathering pricklies from all over. Made it to the ascent and around towards the water station. I passed on drinking, still had a full bladder. About this time I also gave up on looking for a place to empty it, with my ankle receiving a sharp pain everytime I put it down I just wanted to get to the finish ASAP. I didn't let that diminish my fun though. I called out some "on your left" through the narrow course. We came upon a large mud puddle that left a ledge along the left side that was causing some blockage. So I went to the right and slammed my right foot in the puddle to displace as much water/mud as I could. It worked pretty good, and I was on my way. It wasn't long after this that my ankle began to get the better of me, then along came Jeff. He said hi as he passed and I had to take this rear oppourtunity to catch him. So I sprinted up and slapped him on the a$$. We talked for a few seconds and I had to let up, there's no way I could hold that pace for long. About a mile later I heard Betsy behind me, she asked about Jeff. They missed eachother some how. And just after I saw her we were back on the paved road. The first step with my left foot and my ankle popped back to where it should be. Now it was just throbbing to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Unload a full bladder and not roll my ankle.
Post race
Warm down:

I kept walking and did a self eval on my ankle. It will be fine. I went back some hoping I didn't miss Jessica and there she was. So I ran with her until the 1/2 mary turn off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training on trails, which is lots of fun. Ankle and bladder issues.

Event comments:

I'll be back next year for a longer course. I really enjoyed the trails. This could lead into an adventure race next season.
