Swim
Comments: Having not done any significant swimming in the last 2 months, this swim was difficult for me, even wearing the wetsuit. The wetsuit rubbed my neck raw and made my chest feel very constricted, like I struggled just to breathe. I struggled quite a bit until the crowd thinned out after the first yellow buoy. Got into sort of a rhythm after that. Sighting was extremely difficult as my goggles fogged up right away. Had to breast more often than I wanted since sighting was so hard. Felt like I swam extra since navigation was off, too. What would you do differently?: Swim more. Transition 1
Comments: Walked to my bike and took my time transitioning. What would you do differently?: Not walk. Bike
Comments: Felt like I was riding into a head wind the entire time. Wasn't really able to get into aero and stay there since my c-spine issues prevented the sharp neck angle for very long. Still felt very good considering I'd only been on my bike like twice in the last 2 months... not very good, I know.... What would you do differently?: Ride more. Transition 2
Comments: Dismounted where I was told to and promptly fell on my a$$. Wobbly legs and slippery cleats on brick is not a good combination. Walked to my transition area, dreading the upcoming run. Was starting to not feel so good... What would you do differently?: Not fall as I tried to dismount at the dismount line. Total blow to my pride. Run
Comments: This run was HORRIBLE. I tried to start running, but with a recent ankle injury, it didn't last long. I just tried to put one foot in front of the other and keep moving. The sun was hot and I'd forgotten sunscreen, so my skin was burning bad. About mile 2, I started trying to run 2 cones, walk 2 cones, just trying to finish. I grabbed water at every water stop. I quit trying to drink gatorade after the first stop because my stomach severely protested the sweetness of it. Thank goodness for the nice people with water hoses. That mist felt SOOOO good. About mile 4, I realized I was no longer sweating, which was NOT a good thing. That's about the time I ran into PanOut. Thank GOD for her for helping me along that next mile, the chit chat helped me greatly. Pushed on about mile 5 and shuffled/walked the rest of the way in. Saw DH and my girls standing by the finish and literally burst into tears at that point. I was almost finished. I'd never wanted to be done more in my whole life. What would you do differently?: Run more. Post race
Warm down: Drank 2 bottles of water, cried some more, sat and rested a bit. My head felt like it was going to explode. I almost asked Mike to take me to the medical tent, but I didn't want to move again. When I stood up to go get my stuff in transition, I had to fight the urge to vomit. It was awful. Yes, I cried some more. This was such a hard day for me physically. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not training for the last 2 months. Focus prior to this had been for my 1/2 marathons in February and March. I lost my mojo somewhere after that and had no desire whatsoever to train. I probably shouldn't have raced, but I did anyway. I think I learned my lesson: Don't do Oly's without training. Event comments: The race was well organized with so many volunteers. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of my extended BT family as well as our friends in the NAMC. I would like to try this race again in the future as I feel I have some "unfinished business" with this race. Last updated: 2006-11-09 12:00 AM

Woke up at 0320, ate an oatmeal breakfast cookie, took an endurolyte, and drank some water. Got dressed and headed to the race site for 0500 transition opening.
Got into the water with Leslie (1111) about 20 minutes before the wave start to let water into the wetsuit and to pee. Yes, gross, but I was not about to take the wetsuit off to go to a portapotty.
