Swim
What would you do differently?: I would like to be faster in the water, more speed workouts. Transition 1
Comments: T1, fine no problems, the volunteers were great. This one women helped me get changed and had my jog bra set up so all I had to do was dive into. That's talent!! I think they needed more carpet from bike area to walkway. The area became very muddy and my bike shoe bottoms got caked with mud, hard time clipping in. What would you do differently?: more sunscreen Bike
Comments: I was planning on the bike being 7 to 7 1/2 hours. However, I felt real good. The hills weren't bad in fact I would describe the course as gentle rolling hills. However, I also trained in Northern Kentucky, so take that with a grain of salt. LaGrange was great, tons of people on on the road. I was actually surprised at the amount of people of some of these country roads. I think the course was scenic. My back was acting up and I think this was from the swim. Took some Advil and petal through. Some guy had a problem going up a hill and crossed in front of me, but no harm done I have good brakes. I ate my bagel, cookies, salted crackers and swithched between water and Gatorade. I got off the bike thinking my legs felt really good but boy was I tired. My family missed me, they did not expect me back so soon. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 2
Comments: T2 was longer then I expected, but I went potty so I think that is where the time went. Run
Comments: I planned on 5 hours for the run. However, I failed to take into account what exactly 112 miles on the bike in 90 degree heat would do to a person. I met my family and actually smiled for pictures. I started out fine until about mile four when the heat got to me. So I started with the ice down my bra and cold water in my hat and found pretzels. This is what I needed, I felt so much better and just so it became my goal to make it each aid station and thats what I did. I was slow, no doubt but that's what worked. I saw Jim and the kids on the first loop and still feel this was the hardest part of the race. I had to pass the finish chute and know I had to go back out there for another 14 miles. I wasn't happy but I got over it and pressed on. I got to the 20 mile marker at 12:30 into the race. In my mind I thought I could break my 14 hour goal if I just pick up the pace. I did the best I could and dug so deep for every last bit of energy and finished in 13:51. I remembered the sights more than the sound of that night. I came through the chute and this big bright light was ahead and all I could see was the IM login. I didn't know whether to cry or smile. I think I did both and there it is, I finished in all my glory. I can honestly say I have never been more proud of myself and I did good for my first IM What would you do differently?: I don't know, make the sun go away, cool the temp off about twenty degrees, nothing in my control. Post race
Warm down: Met the family and headed back to the hotel room. I just wanted a shower so bad. Event comments: This will always be a special race for me even if (and I know I will) I do another IM. NYC was my first marathon and I still say it was the best. Last updated: 2006-11-12 12:00 AM

On thrus evening I received an e-mail indicating there had been a change in the swim course due to weather conditions. A little freaky. Jim and I headed down to Louisville on Friday morning for the packet pick-up and OWS. As we approached the water we met some women who wished us luck and told us to stay by the retaining wall. Ok, whatever. We started our swim and it appeared to be fine until we went into the current. Apparently we had been swimmming for some time and my husband realized we weren't going anywhere. The Ohio River became one giant endless pool. The moment I stopped I could feel myself being pushed with the current so fast it was scary. We made our way over to the wall and swam as best we could. I think IM did the smartest thing my changing the course. I think that you would have had allot of DNFs or worse. After the swim we went up to the Galt for packet pick-up. After this we walked up to 4th street where they were setting up the finish line. Real neat. Ate some lunch and went home. We returned the following day with kids in tow and all my gear. Basically I really just wanted to relax on Saturday. This race has been on my mind 24/7 for the last few months I was just excited and scared, I think all I need was some family time. We ate dinner early and went back to hotel. In bed by 8'o clock but didn't fall asleep until 11pm.
Woke up at 3:30am, ate a bagel and Diet Coke and just sat at the window looking out. The city was still hoping. Woke family up and made our way down to the transition early. I went dropped my bike off, checked tires, brakes and CAT eye, stuck another bagel in between my bars and went off to be body marked. Met up with family, ate a banana ans started our 3/4 mile walk to the swim start.
