Pre-race routine:

Got dropped off at the shuttle.
Event warmup:

It was coooooold. Especially for us natives Angelenos. Kept walking around and stretched a bit. Spotted Xan and spoke to him. He looked primed and his result shows it. We looked around for Chris but it was a fairly large event.

Comments:

It was a blast. I was a nervous wreck all week due to my LASIK surgery on Wednesday. For some reason I thought it would make for a good taper since I couldn't exercise anyway. The fear of having a laser in your eye and downing valium and wine to get to sleep is not an ideal taper :)

The run itself rocked. This was my farthest race I have run and I felt real comfortable. There was never one point that I thought I wouldn't finish or that my pace was out of control. Didn't come close to walking, even on the couple of big hills. I have a nasty habit of going out way too quickly for the first mile. Didn't happen today.
What would you do differently?:

Obviously, not schedule a pretty intense (at least mentally) surgery the week of the race. It wasn't until Saturday I was even 100% certain I would run. I had some minor complications from the surgery and didn't want to run if I had to keep a protective contact lens in place. It was taken out Saturday and eye doc gave me the absolute positive clearance to run.

On the race itself, I know after the fact (ah, how convenient) that I could have run at a slightly quicker pace throughout. Was able to really sprint the last 1/2 mile. But it was also fun to pass scores of people and finish not completely spent which has been the norm for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a bit and had some water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Eye surgery on Wednesday had me stressed all week (and even the previous weeks thinking of it). I hadn't exercised at all since Tuesday. I was also a little paranoid of rubbing my eyes which the doctor told me not to do. I had a sweatband which really helped.

Event comments:

Happy I did it. I am always a little worried about inaugural events, especially one this large but it was pulled off extremely well. Slight starting delay but that is to be expected. All I could think of at the end is do I really have to run this far after swimming 1.2 miles AND biking 56 miles?!
