Run
Comments: Just a fun, colorful course with many participants dressed for the weather in the latest running pilgrim fashions and turkey-esque costumes. :) I didn't see mile marker 3 but didn't have a watch on either, so checking splits wasn't an option. I think that was my first race without a watch. It felt strange to not know the time until the end. What would you do differently?: Push for faster foot turnover and longer strides. Post race
Warm down: The post-race snacks were simple: bananas, little packets of crackers with PB, and beer! The local pub, The Burren, hosted hundreds of us sweaty runners while another hundred or so waited outside in the rain so we wouldn't violate any fire codes. While inside, I had a free guinness; Matthew had one, too (and he doesn't like beer). They were served in Gatorade cups, which made us giggle. "mmm mmm, sure are a lot of good gatorade drinkers here!" we said. We did enjoy a little post-race chat with one wheelworker, Francis Floyd, a very nice guy who is a darn fast runner. His fiancee, Rachael, was expected to stroll in at any minute, but it seems she was stuck somewhere in the line outside. Honestly, I wasn't much in the mood to race and I treated it as a tough workout. Not walking was my biggest goal, which I achieved. It just didn't feel like an all-out-effort was needed for today, and I'm happy with how I finished. Matthew was just about 10 seconds ahead of me. He ran well but also not all-out. We were both happy with our times and happier still to enjoy the warm hot water shower back at home afterwards. And then the cooking began... What limited your ability to perform faster: Wake up in the race-ready mindset. Instead I woke up hoping it'd get rained out. Event comments: Free Guinness, even at 10am, is always good. Jogged with my dear SO, Matthew, along the 0.5 mile path to the race site and signed in just in time to get the last two race numbers, 1999 & 2000.
Hopped in place, chatted with friends, and waited patiently in the drizzling rain.
