Swim
Comments: Again, I let nerves get the best of me. I started strong but needed to be nearer to the front of the wave. I had to swim through/around a lot of people. My confidence was really soaring as I started to catch up to the other waves. I got to the stairs and was ready to rock but a couple of guys where having trouble getting their legs moving. Politely squeezed around them and up the stairs. Some guy in my group was using a snorkel for the swim. Is this kosher?? What would you do differently?: Not starting in mid-pack and then have to swim over the masses. I need to become more confident with my swimming ability. Transition 1
Comments: I got my suit off without much difficulty. Got my socks on wet feet. Then the helmet and glasses. I decided unwisely to put on my shoes in transition although I am pretty good at getting on and off on the fly. What would you do differently?: Shoes on bike...kicked off my water bottle behind my saddle and had to stop during mounting ( probable 10-12 second delay) Bike
Comments: A couple of times during the bike I think I relaxed a bit. I was pushing hard and turning a high cadence but might have been able to go a bit harder...that waterbottle at T1/bike mount added a few seconds to an other wise good bike for me. I passed a lot of guys in my age group (most likely from earlier waves) with REALLY, REALLY EXPENSIVE bikes. I was pleased to pass them on my old Cervelo P2K with the chipped paint and old parts and strange German flag paint scheme. Goes to show you it's the motor not the bike (although I do have bike envy!). Had 1 gel during the bike and used endurolytes in my bottles with no issues. Felt I nailed my nutrition pretty well. What would you do differently?: Not getting complacent in a couple of areas. I need to become proficient in mount and dismount. Dismount came up on me so fast that I didn't have a chance to get on top of my shoes. Just clipped out and started running. Transition 2
Comments: I wasn't prepared to dismount as I said but was able to runn with the bike and find my rack w/o problems. Got into my shoes put on my hat and stapped on my fuel belt wit 2 bottles full of endurolytes/H2O...then I was off. What would you do differently?: Dismount the way I know how to. I need t o know the area better than I did obviously. Run
Comments: I drank my own fluids throughout the run but took the cold water and splashed it on my face and head. I knew I was ahead of my goal finishing time so I may have dogged it a little for the first three miles (splits were around 7:40) I picked up the pace a little at the turn and started reeling in guys from my age group. I just tried to stay on shoulders and pass when I could. Ran really, really hard past mile 6 to the finish. Sprinted in front of 3 guys from my age group right at the end. I saw that my wife had taken a cab to the race and was there to greet me at the finish. I was so happy with my race I almost broke down at the end, Macho, huh? What would you do differently?: Push the pace a little. I feel I'm capable of 7:10's off the bike Post race
Warm down: Headed right for the food line (strawberrys, banana, CC cookie, rice/beans, H2O, bread, BEER), then a massage on my sore hammy's and ITB's. Went over to watch my friend finish strong but lost her in the crowd What limited your ability to perform faster: I think I peaked for this race like I planned. I told my co-worked that I wanted a 2:30 and a couple of them balked (how do you like me now?) More bricks are in my future. Event comments: Awesome race..see you next year! I was up during the night for about 4 hrs with my wife who was vomitting up all the food we ate for the day. Poor thing. I finally nodded off for good at 4 AM and my alarm went off at 4:45. Got my stuff together, ate a banana and a bagel with PB and honey, and drank some H2O. Left my wife in the hotel room asleep.
Got to the race with most of the masses...took me forever to get marked and into transition. I only had about 20 min in transition to set up my stuff and make it to the beach to start so no jogging this time. I figured the 3/4 mile walk would be useful so I just pepped up my pace in my bare feet. Got my chip and donned my full suit and went swimming for about two hundred yards. More to just get away from the testosterone than anything else. I was really nervous because this was my first rae of this magnitude (amount of people, age group competition, etc.) but I was good as soon as I strted swimming.
