Run
Comments: Felt good from the start. Wasn't sure how fast I was going until mile 1 (actually thought my pace might be too slow) and then decided to back off a touch. In the 2nd & 3rd miles, the pack started to string out more and and I settled in just off the back of a group of maybe 8 other runners. I was still feeling good by mile 4 and knew the downhill mile was about to begin. My goal was to make it fast, but not get carried away so that I would still have some gas for the uphill 6th. I knew that I should be able to crack 42:00 as long as I didn't blow myself up. I think I paced it pretty well. Even though mile 6 was quite a bit slower, I was running faster than most of those around me. By the time I entered the stadium I was pretty spent, but the track made it easy to focus on my strides and I found a modest finishing kick. Chip time was 41:05--a PR by over 3min. Also, I did walk to drink at the mile 2 rest stop (and again at mile 4). This seemed to be a good decision for me. What would you do differently?: Nothing. It was a good effort and I think I paced myself pretty well. Post race
Warm down: Jack & Emma met me at the finish and I walked with them to get some food & drink. Then found Kath & Sarah and we began the trek back to our car. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not training for this race. Event comments: Well run race for good causes. Good family event and not far from my home. I'll be back again. We were a bit late and parking was nearly a mile from registration, so we had to hustle to get Jack to the start of the kids' 1 mile run. He joined me for a light jog warm-up and we made it with a couple minutes to spare. I jogged back while watching him run. His race finished at the same spot as the 10k--in the WC staduim on the track. He did very well!
After that, I only had about 20min until my race and had to go back to registration first to get some pins for my number.
Only had time for maybe 5min of jogging (plus the jogging to and from the kids' run) and 1 set of strides. Got into line for the start around a group of others towards the front that were targeting 40-43min.
