![]() Swim
Comments: I felt good on the swim despite the mass start. I made it a point to just relax and draft most of the way. The wind was causing a bit of a chop once you cleared the island. The swim felt a bit long but who knows I did take it easy. Maybe that why my time was a little on the high end. What would you do differently?: Nada. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: I was racked in the first row entering transition. Got my stuff and had to run across transition. It sucks to run in cycling shoes. I should take the time to learn to slip into my shoes on the bike. Maybe one day I will work on that skill. What would you do differently?: Learn to leave my shoes clipped onto the bike. ![]() Bike
Comments: Started off in the small ring for the first 15 minutes. Just like in training. I knew there would be 10 climbs on the ride so a good warmup was critical. There was a bit of a head wind going east towards the beach. It was nothing like last year, but it was enough to nag. I kept my HR in the 160's and rode my race. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Racked the bike and started to put on my running gear. I picked up my running shoes and found them covered with ants. I had to spend some time getting them all out. Grabbed my fuel belt, visor & race number and headed out. What would you do differently?: Nada. ![]() Run
Comments: Got on the run course and my HR was high. I slowed down to get into rhythm but it never came. At the one mile mark I knew something was wrong. I felt the familiar soreness in my legs I have come to know as dehydration. I ran all the way to the turnaround in 24 minutes. A pretty good pace considering things were not right. I walked through the water station to make sure I hydrated. It was too late. The last 5K was a struggle. It was hot and humid as hell. This was the worst 10K I have ever run. What would you do differently?: There's a lesson in here somewhere. I just need to figure this out. ![]() Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: The sinus infection and fever on Wednesday probably had a part in today's meltdown. No worries, this was a training type race in preparation for MiamiMan. However, no matter what, it still sucks when you know you could have done better. Event comments: Great race & venue. One of the harder Olympic distance races to do. Lots of fun. This is a must do race. Last updated: 2006-12-17 12:00 AM

Checked the bike in on Saturday, so all I had to take was my transition bag to the race. Got to the venue just before 5:00 AM. Picked up my chip, got body marked, filled my tires & set up my stuff. I was done by 5:30 AM so I just hung out with some Hammerheads for a while. Headed to the pier to catch the ferry that took me to Escape Island where the race would start.
Not much. Just walked to the pier and swam about 100 yards from the ferry to the island.
