Swim
Comments: Water was very choppy...white caps. It was windy also. Difficult catch breath because of the height of waves getting in the way. Did the backstroke most of the time...best way to breath and got through water faster. No run ins with other swimmers except toward the end with a woman who swam up on top of me and wouldn't move over. Spacing between swimmers was very good. What would you do differently?: Very difficult to account for rough waters, so just basically work on better cardio condition so that breathing is less of a struggle. Transition 1
Comments: I was disoriented from getting beat up by the waves, so I started putting on my baseball cap instead of bike helmet. Luckily my husband was set up next to me in transition and told me to put on my helmet. I was very unprepared for a smooth, quick transition. Did too many things that were unnecessary. What would you do differently?: Streamline transition routine. Wear different bathing suit so that I don't feel need to put shorts over it. Rack bike differently. Buy lighter road bike so picking up from rack isn't so cumbersome. I had a mountain bike. Bike
Comments: The bike portion went quicker than I thought. I think due to the type of bike I had (hybrid) it was difficult to gain speed going downhill because I was at highest gear and couldn't pedal fast enough to gain even more speed. I was at mercy of my bike. Going up hill, especially final uphill mile was better than expected. Not much in the way of speed, but I never got off my bike. What would you do differently?: Buy a light road bike! Transition 2
Comments: I came to total stop before getting off bike. Bike is wrong size for me, plus I didn't feel like getting hurt! I didn't take off helmet while running into transition. What would you do differently?: Unclip helmet while running. Run
Comments: I started running, but lost steam. I did a run/walk the entire time. Ran to finish line. What would you do differently?: Running seems to be my weakest area. More training. Post race
Warm down: Got a massage. What limited your ability to perform faster: Half-assed training. Not learning proper, or more efficient training techniques. Ability to swim better was greatly do to weather and water conditions....that can't be controlled. Event comments: I plan to spend more time with Lobstergirl after race next year! My family was with me and we all had to get back home to attend my son's baseball game. Missed out on lunch. Would like to spend more time meeting people and talking about experience with condition especially during the swim. I agree with Lobstergirl when she said that they should provide electrolyte drinks on course. They provided giveaways such as t-shirt, cap, nutrition bars, drink mix. I missed the lunch, but it looked great from what I could see. Massage was great. Pleasantly surprised to know they provided it. I would definitely do this race again. Very challenging first race, but provided big boost in confidence because if I could get through a tough course like this, then I have no qualms about getting through other courses. I ate breakfast before we left the house (oatmeal, 1/2 banana). Once we got there we set up in transition. I saw Lobstergirl. She mentioned not seeing me in transition afterward because I was so far behind :)
None.
