Pre-race routine:

After a false start leaving the house (forgot the camera; it took us an hour to get 5 miles from the house) we drove up to Hartwell. The Best Western we stayed at had a Circus going on. What free entertainment. The local clowns let their kids run around the hotel till all hours of the night. I didn't bother me much but Capt No Fun was ready to kill someone.

Woke up at 5am, had some oatmeal and gatorade and off we went to find the race site.

I realized the night as I was preping everything that when I registered for this race, I registered as a Novice. It didn't hit me until I read the start information that I would be starting last. Oh joy.
Event warmup:

Stretching and little running and a little swimming.

The bikes where racked pretty tight in the transition area. I was the first one to my slot. Just after I setup the others showed up. One of folks, a girl, made a total passive-aggressive comment about me taking up too much space "wow, he's got a little hotel setup over there". Hey lady, GFY. I wasn't taking up anymore space than anyone else.
Swim
  • 23m 1s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim time was 21:55. Pace is based on that. Run time to T1 was 1:04 based on my watch. HR during swim was 170 avg and 177 max.

Since I was starting in the last group (which was the smallest) I had my pick of where to start. I decided to start closest to the beach and high step it for a while. While this plan worked out while I was running, as soon as I decided to dive in it completly fell apart. Have you tried swimming in 2 feet of water? Next time I will try the whole dolphin thing.

Once I got my swim on, it went pretty good. I quickly caught up to a few trailing women (group before us) and then a few trailing masters (the group before that).

The only major issue that I had was about 150 yards to go I sighted to the swim exit and felt I could hammer it. I looked up one more time about 50 yards later and I guess I had gotten a little off course. I stopped to tread water and for a split second was totally disoriented. It was almost like I was turned around. As soon as I got my bearings again, I took off. Weird.

Standard trainsition for me. Sit down on bucket. Socks, sunglasses and helmet on. Bike off the rack and gone.

Comments:

My bike computer says the distance was 22.9 but who am I to challenge the omnipotent race director.

Felt I should take the bike easy as I still had a 10k to run. Within the first 3 miles, I pulled out an uncrustable and almost choked on it. Once that was down, things went awesome until the later miles.

I pulled off at mile 18 to visit with nature. With the drought and all, I figured I should do my part to rehydrate the flora. Back on the bike and hammered her home.

Run
  • 56m 35s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Same with my sprint tri, stomach did not feel comfortable for first mile. During mile 4 I got a stitch. Saw Leslie like 50 times on the run. Was passed by my swim coach Jennifer Lesser.
Post race
Warm down:

Chatted with Leslie, David and Mindy. Since I was racing Novice, I found out I finished 3rd in that division. Sweet! Unfortunatly, the field was very tough this year and had I raced my age group, I would have finished 4th from LAST. Ouch.

Event comments:

Great course and great race overall. Lots of serious trathletes.
