Pre-race routine:

Mill around.

Overall contestants refers to men only. I would have been 10th woman. MA says I shouldn't cut it off and race on that side just so I could place higher. She's probably right.
Event warmup:

Swim out to where it was deep enough for me to take a whiz.
Swim
  • 15m 33s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

First swim since my race 2 weeks ago, and it felt like it. Still not a bad swim, but my arms might have fallen off if I had to go farther. Sighting not so bad. I stayed pretty far to the outside. There was a fair amount of violence in the pack.

Almost the same swim time as last year.
Transition 1
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

run run run run! Had a good 'cross mount and passed about 6 people at once with that. Cool.

T1 faster than last year.
Bike
  • 45m 49s
  • 17 miles
  • 22.26 mile/hr
Comments:

This is a good fast course. Since I started third wave, I actually got to pass some folks this time. Whoo!

Bike was slightly slower than last year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Had trouble getting my chopat strap on. And I didn't leave my sunglasses in transition, and I really didn't need them.

T2 faster than last year, so my transitions have improved, despite needing to add my strap on the run.

Run
  • 22m 27s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty happy with this run. I didn't have on a watch so I just went as hard as I could, and if I felt like throwing up I backed off a bit. No drinking at all, and that was just the right amount.

Took out almost a minute of my run from last year. How'd that happen?
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a bit of this super sweet "natural" juice, then scrapped it for some power ade and a bunch of water. Next, the beer truck.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

< 6hrs of sleep each night is probably a problem. Only 4 the night before. I made no effort to taper for this so my legs were a little heavy at the start. The lack of sleep was the real problem.

Event comments:

Sprints are fun. I don't feel wiped out after them. But I still think I'm better suited to longer races, or at least I enjoy them more. Maybe if I could knock a couple more minutes off my 5k that would change, but I doubt it. I just don't have that top end speed. Eh, it is what it is.
