Swim
Comments: knew by the first turn it was going to be a long day. Saw my watch at first turn 18+ and then at the half way 40+ min, 18 down and 22 back yuck!! Kept going throught the next lap just ready to be done with it. Finished up ran out and got to T1 What would you do differently?: Who knows!! Train better and be mentally better prepared for the race? Transition 1
Comments: actually not a bad transistion for me, did have to go pee so with both portos full I left a puddle in transistion while sitting on the ground putting on my shoes SORRY!! Bike
Comments: So coming out of T1 and already feeling like I didn't want to be here I thought lets stay positive and maybe the day will change. And it did for a while. Stayed calm and smooth and averaged around 20 out to the first turnaround at 28 miles. Got passed by one or two but passed at least a half dozen fulls and a ton of halfers. Then on the way back it happened. Going over a bump and pheewww!!! First flat on a tubular so here we go. Never changed a tubular before and just thought to myself " it wasn't meant to be today." Luckily two kids manning a corner came over and one had his car keys so I used them to get the tire off. Then like an angel the roaming mechanic came up to offer some assistance. Come to find out my spare has short stem so it took all of us to get air going into the tube on my disc. Finally we were able to get air going in and got the disc back on and I was on my way. 10 min or so lost and my attitude was shot. Rolled into the half way and saw wife and friends and let them know it was not meant to be. Picked up my special needs but those bottles were a cookin. I failed to mention it was already 90+ with 100% sunshine and no shade. The aid stations were great with ice cold water and GE but after a few minutes on the bike it was very warm and getting harder to drink and feel refreshed. Headed back out on the second loop and was really starting to struggle. Wind had picked up and shifted and it was really starting to take its toll on everyone. I was slowing way down but was not getting passed by anyone. At about mile 70 or so the death march was on. Coasting the down hills and the uphills were really gettin annoying seeing 8 mph. Finally after what seemed like days on the bike made it back to T2 What would you do differently?: i don't know EVERYTHING!! better training and mentally a whole new day Transition 2
Comments: was taking my time at this point no sense in hurrying when the day was shot Run
Comments: so the death march continued, first mile around mid 9's and I decided it was not worth hurting so much when all time goals were long since out the window. Backed off in mile 2 and the next 24 as I thought no sense screwing up finishing this race and hurting so much to finish an hour or so faster. Continued on and really enjoyed the run experience. Talked to a few people and tried to say something positive to everyone I passed or was passed by. It was really hot at the start of the run and I poured anything I could over my head to cool down and drank like a fish. Started eating and trying everything as I was feeling a little hungry. At about 24.5 finally got sick of being out there and got a little motivation so I started to run and actully ran sub 9 last mile and was excited to see the line. Grabbed my son from my wife and ran across the line with him, without a doubt the best part of the day. Felt fine immediately after. What would you do differently?: Actually RUN the course and not walk it!! Post race
Warm down: felt great seeing I never really pushed myself. Ate for a little bit and hung out with the wife, son and our friends. Hit the massage tent after about 30 min and had a wonderful massage. When I got up from that I had the chills and we headed to the truck and back to the hotel,. What limited your ability to perform faster: hacking my brains out all week prior, poor inconsistent training, mentally not ready Event comments: As far as an Iron Distance non brand I thought it was phoenominal. Excellent race and would like to go back some day to redeem the extra 2-3 hours I spent out there. Had a huge list of what to do differently next time and that started with hiring a coach and giving in to someone elses opinions. Redemption comes exactly 9 months from this race at IM CDA!! left on Wednesday night around 7:00PM and drove straight through to Oklahoma City with a couple of stops at casinos to break up the monotiny. Had some interesting encounters with gas station workers and cats with no tails along the way. Finally arrived at 9:30 AM and had to wait til 10:30 to be able to check into the hotel. Spent Thursday mostly sleeping til late afternoon and then a short bike followed by a short run. Friday had a swim in the morning and really confirmed it was going to be a long day on Saturday. I had a head cold and was coughing a ton the whole week and the waves were crashing and I just felt like crap.
woke up around 3:45 and headed next door to an all night breakfast joint. Didn't eat a ton as I think I was maybe a little nervous. Got to the start and was really dissapointed because I just flat out didn't want it. I still had a headache and just was not pumped for this race that I had been training and dreaming about for an entire year. Got everything together and went back to the truck for a 30 min nap.Got up around 6:35 for the 7:15 start and did my final prep
