Swim
Comments: this was my first ows with other people, and only my 4th time swimming since last summer. i was a little anxious, and was talking to a friend about how i was going to get kicked and knocked out right away, that i'd be the one hanging onto a boat towed back to shore. around 100-150 yds in someone lost sight, and swam across and drove her hand straight into my side, then she just kept going! kinda halfway knocked the wind outa me, guy came over on the kayak to see if i needed a hand, i just rolled over on my back and kicked until i got my breathing back. it really hurt my ribs swimming freestyle with that arm, so i settled into a nice steady breatstroke paying attention to getting under the water and away from the wind. (it was pushing us into shore, away from the bouy.) this worked well, and i actually ended up finishing the swim a little faster (3 min) than i had planned. note for the future, lake berryessa water doesn't taste good. i swallowed alot. What would you do differently?: probably swim a couple of times. maybe i should start adding that into my training! :) Transition 1
Comments: felt a little intoxicated coming out of the water, especially on the ramp, it was really slippery. decided not to leave the shoes on the bike. there were huge rocks in the transition area that didn't look pleasing to step on, so i just played slip and slide in my shoes until i got to the mounting line. What would you do differently?: probably would have left my shoes on the bike. some old tri'er i was talking to about the drunk feeling said to try a sea sickness patch, that it's helped him out in the past. Bike
Comments: i had to make a stop at a port-a-john that was set up a little off the road at what looked like a ranger hut or something. that thing came just in the nick of time to. What would you do differently?: immodium ad probably would have run a righer casette. i was running an 11-21 and couldn't seem to keep my cadence at a good rate. it was too hilly for that flat of a cogset. would have changed my position to a little more relaxed, i was riding fairly aggressive. Transition 2
Comments: decided to wear socks in the middle of T2. i got to t2, went to grab my hat, only to discover that someone walked away with it at some point in the race. so i was running with swimcap/helmet hair, in the wind. im sure i was a sight to see. What would you do differently?: put a lock on my hat! Run
Comments: this is where i blew the race. i had to stop twice at the porta-johns. i really don't think i should have even run after having to stop on the bike, but i really wanted to finish. i got that lovely pre-bonk feeling around 1 mile in, so i sucked up a gel (which i dug out of my transition bag at t1, just in case). all i had that morning was a bagel with pb and honey on it. my acid reflux was really bothering me after the gel, so i drank two cups of h20 and walked for a while after the first aid station to let my stomach settle down. guncollector passed me with about 1.5 miles to go so i huffed it next to him for most of the way back, chatting alot, but i figure i had already blown it, i backed off with a quarter mile of so and justed cruised in. What would you do differently?: no gel, no gel, no gel. immodium ad. i actually would have probably dnf'ed after the ride feeling the way i was, but i had to finish my first tri. i didn't wear a watch, so it was really difficult to pace myself. i usually run around 8min/miles training fairly easily, but am constantly pacing my time. Post race
Warm down: potty break, licorice, gatorade What limited your ability to perform faster: poop! :) Event comments: as much as it sounds like i was miserable, i still had a blast. it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves, and some great athletes. the dude that won it was at the run turnaround, with 2 miles to go, when i passed him on the bike!!! he was a stud, the girl right behind him was amazingly strong as well. my "coach" ended up taking 13th overall, and 3rd in our agegroup. we had a good group of people up there from the club and that made it alot better of a time for me. saturday i had a wedding for a good friend of mine. after the wedding i loaded up my dad's truck and took off. entered lake berryessa into my phone and realized it was far! it took me around 5:20 to get there, but i was taking my time. stopped at a little mexican place and got a rice burrito with a little bit of avocado (my favorite night before carb). got to lake berryessa around 12:30 or so. couldn't find anyone to see where i should park/camp, so i just picked a spot next to some campers i saw there. jumped in the back of the truck and stayed awake until 2:30 when the cinco de mayo party at the bar finally wound down. those guys were loud, with alot of loud music. finally got to sleep and woke up at 3:30 needing to find a restroom fast (if you know what i mean). back to bed and woke up at 5:45. (had to use the restroom again). i was really contemplating whether or not to even race. between the upset stomach, and the new infection on my arm, (oh yeah, got another infection, i think it may be staph again. right where i rest on my aero pads) i didn't really know if i wanted to race, but i figured, paid the money, drove up, may as well.
ran a mile, stretched, talked to some friends.
