Pre-race routine:

Put on by Runner's Soul. The race results only show finishing times so I don't know how many people might have started the swim and not finished. The number of participants listed for my age group, and overall, is from the registration list during the week before the event. Overall, there were 83 who finished the olympic swim and 79 who finished the race. In my age group, 18 finished the swim and 17 completed the whole course.

It rained during the night and, while it was still cool in the morning, it didn't look too bad traveling to the event. It started raining very lightly as we set up so I got out a big plastic garbage bag and put all my stuff inside it. Then I realized I had forgotten all my water bottles. I got a bottle of water to put on the bike but it had a screw-on cap. It was also too small to fit tightly in the holder and I was worried it might fall out during the ride but it didn't.
Event warmup:

About 10 minutes before the start I had a gel and some water, and got in the lane. I did a couple of 100m laps with a rest between to warmup.
Swim
  • 30m 42s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 03s / 100 meters
Comments:

I always had a pair of feet in front of me. Even when I passed, there was another pair of feet. I'm not sure if the drafting helped more than the blocking hindered or vise versa. Some of the turns were very congested and I must streamline out better than average because I always had to pull up after each turn. The occasional sprints to pass were taxing too. Oddly enough, I finished only 2 seconds faster than the time I had predicted.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

The results include both transitions in the bike time so this time is an estimation.

Longer run from the pool out to the parking lot transition area. I saw my wife cheering along the way. Because of the rain, I had stuffed all my gear and carrying bag into a large plastic garbage bag. Digging through the bag cost me some time and I took a moment to evaluate the weather too. I decided add an extra tech t-shirt for warmth instead of a jacket. Wrong decision, as the weather got worse during the ride.
Bike

Comments:

The results include both transitions in the bike time so this time is an estimation. Also, my bike computer thinks the 40k distance was a wee bit short.

There was a very light rain at the start but it looked like the weather might break. Wrong! According to TheWeatherNetwork it got colder while we rode. The rain came and went several times, and was pouring down pretty hard sometimes too. I was getting pretty cold and muddy by the time I finished. I had two halves of a power bar in my bento box and ate that. The water bottle was awkward to open and use, especially with cold fingers, but I didn't feel like I needed much water during the ride anyway. I passed lots of people and only got passed twice.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s

I was very cold and more than a little wobbly getting off the bike. Digging for gear and cold fingers still cost me some time but it wasn't too bad. At least the rain had stopped. I downed about half the bottle of water since I knew I had been neglecting that. Again, it looked like the weather might be getting better so I didn't add any more layers. My wife was in the crowd again at the run exit.
Run
  • 1h 02m 42s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 16s  min/km
Comments:

The rain had stopped and I was warming up as I ran but it seemed to take longer than usual to get my legs running right. I may have had too much water in T2 as it was sloshing around inside for the first half of the run. The run is where everyone usually catches me but I was at the 3k turn-around point before I saw anyone else. The rain made everything clean and green down in the park, and it was really a nice setting for the run.

I was a minute or two back from the turn when I passed one of the other guys I swim with, still going out. He did IM Canada in about 13 hours and I started thinking I would be doing pretty good if I could beat him to the finish. Before long though he came loping past me with these big long, floating, spider-leg strides. *Sigh*, Maybe someday I'll learn to run.

I walked some of the steeper sections going up the hill. In the final stretch, I found something extra and sprinted past some others to the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

The final sprint took a lot out of me and I just sat down on the ground in the middle of the milling crowd to catch my breath. Then I got some food and wandered around chatting with people I knew for a bit. My wife drove me and my gear home where I quickly changed. I got my swim stuff ready in case I decided to go for the afternoon swim lesson later and went back for the awards presentations.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I might have done better in a slightly faster swim lane but I wasn't sure what to predict. The weather on the bike ride was brutal. My running just needs lots more work. I still haven't put much effort into streamlining my transitions either.

Event comments:

The big features of this race, for me, are that it's only a few minutes away from home and I know lots of people here. This was also the venue for my first tri, when I did the super-sprint distance.
