Pre-race routine:

Had a cup of coffee while getting ready for the race. Had a banana for breakfast. I don't usually eat breakfast but try to right before a race. I was nervous about today's race so I worked a sudoku puzzle before leaving. Packet pick-up/race end were 3/4 mile apart! Went and picked up race gear and parked halfway between start and finish. Was there way too early so I sat in the car and worked on homework (still trying to calm my nerves!)
Event warmup:

The day was sunny but windy. I started my warmup about 20 minutes before the race. I ran a little bit and walked a little more. Calves were bothering me (extremely tight) so I worked at getting them to relax (hard to get them to relax when I'm all keyed up!!) As I was doing a final jog my hip flexor said Hi and that was the end of that(or so I thought)!

Comments:

I started at the BOP and was cruising along pretty well. First mile time was awesome and I thought I was going to do OK this time. It was about 1/2 mile later that the wind seemed to pick up. I was really struggling to keep my pace. At the 2nd mile I was still ahead of my target and aware that I could beat my self-imposed goal. 1/2 mile later my hip flexor wanted my undivided attention!! I refused to attend to it right away and it yelled even louder! This resulted in a short walk while I talked to it to let it know that I would take care of it later but right now I really needed to finish this race. It must have seen the logic in my argument because it let me finish the race but not at the full throttle that I had wanted! Finished the race as hip flexor started to yell again (I sure wish there was a pacifier or something you could give it at times like this!!!) Looked at my time and was disappointed. Goal not met!
What would you do differently?:

Not sure what I could do differently. I could say to train more but that wouldn't have helped in this case. I felt good about this race overall just not the last 1/2 mile or so.
Post race
Warm down:

I never thought an apple could taste soooo good! Walked to the car to drop off headband and gloves. Walked to the restaurant where the post-race buffet was being held.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mother Nature!! She's pretty stubborn and only does things her way.

Event comments:

The pizza buffet was nice. I would definitely do this race again if for no other reason than to prove to myself that I can beat my time there! That seems to be my standard M.O. these days.

Performance: Good
Course: Out and back along the riverfront. Nice flat route. Wind was pretty strong coming off the river. I had not anticipated the crosswind when I was training. The turnaround was a hairpin turnaround whereas the other races I've been in with a turnaround have a bigger area for that.
