Run
Comments: OH MY GOD. (see course description) What would you do differently?: Even yaktrax wouldn't help in the section. I don't think I COULD have done anything different! Transition 1
Comments: Mountain bike, platform pedals....oh yeah :) At least I didn't have to change shoes. Short transition because of this. Helmet on and go. What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: Turning towards the 2nd transition area, I took the turn wide because of a huge snow bump, then hit ice, then cut off another biker because I couldn't get control of my bike because of the ice (bikers were going out as well as in....kind of a tight turn). THEN, fell on my a$$. Laid in the snow for about 15 seconds to make sure I was ok. Determined that I was in fact ok. Walked the bike about 20 feet and got back on. Then this section got even more fun with ruts in the snow. Ha! What would you do differently?: try not fall off the damn bike Transition 2
Comments: T2 was fine. Helmet off, rack bike. Go running. Had a gel at the beginning of the 2nd run. T3 was also fine. Helmet on, get on bike, pray that I don't fall because I don't want to call 911. (I did carry my cell phone because of that dream!). What would you do differently?: not do a crazy race like this? haha! Run
Comments: SLOW. Short steps. No falling allowed. What would you do differently?: Wear yaktrax. They would have DEFINITELY helped in this section. Gotta check into those. Post race
Warm down: Biked again 6 miles back to the 1st transition area, racked the bike, ran to the finish. On that last section of biking, I saw Mark in his car. He came out to make sure I hadn't died or something. :) Warm down? um, how about warm up? I was frozen. Got hot chocolate that was great. Mark and Ben helped me get my bike in my car and hung around for a little bit until we were all too frozen to talk anymore. What limited your ability to perform faster: Well, let's see. SNOW, ice, slush, cold, mountain bike, SNOW. Event comments: This RD is awesome and always puts on a good race. Even had chip timing for this one - though I think it was only for total time. This was a great race, but very difficult due to conditions. But, the race goes on regardless of conditions, and everyone knows that up front. Crazy day! Fun, but crazy. And I'm going to have a nasty bruise on my butt. It's sore. Last updated: 2007-01-05 12:00 AM

I wasn't sure that I was going to do this race, even when I got there! It was darn cold, no sun, and we still have a ridiculous amount of snow on the ground from multiple snowstorms in the past month. I was surprised that there were still a fair amount of people there! Oh, and I'm a bit timid about potentially unsafe conditions after breaking my foot right before my first marathon....I do not want to risk a whole season. PLUS, I had a dream last night that I had to call 911 from the bike course because someone had broken their femur falling off their bike....I was SO hoping that it wasn't a warning!
This race has a different format: run 1.5 miles, bike 4.5 miles, run 2.5 miles, bike 6 miles, run 50 yds to the finish line. The RD had posted on the website that the conditions weren't so great. He said that the first 1.5 mile run would probably take the time that 2.5 miles would take. The roads for the bike were mostly snowcovered with icy areas.
So I take my el-cheapo mountain bike to the 1st transition area. Not safe to ride the road bike. It's darn heavy. And it still has reflectors on it. :) LOL! The rest of the pre race routine involved sitting my car to stay warm.
I ran to the porta-johns and back. Debated about what to wear. Settled on 2 long sleeve shirts, fleece vest, windproof cycling jacket, tri shorts under fleece lined tights, hat, liner gloves under windproof full-finger biking gloves.
