Total Time = 1h 29m 24s
Overall Rank = 209/379
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 3/13
Pre-race routine:

I ate two pieces of toast and drank some water. Woke up about 5:10 and left about 5:40am. Jammed to some sweet tunes in the car. Paul Simon's "Kodachrome" was on the radio and I continued to have that song in my head the entire time on the bike. I guess it helped me not think about my leg muscles.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike .25 miles from the car to the transition area. Set everything up. Tried not to be psyched out by the others racking their bikes in the athena group and nearby
Swim
  • 13m 11s
  • 528 yards
  • 02m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

5/13 in the Athena group, 167/379 overall. Well, that was official the slowest recorded swim of my life. Earlier this week, I swam 11 laps in 11:45 in the pool, so 2:05-2:10/100yards. Plus, my swim time still puts me in the top 40%, which makes me think that the swim was longer than 1/3 or I added some distance not swimming exactly straight? Did anyone else notice that a lot of people were walking out of the water? I kept running, albeit slow, but I was just a little surprised. I didn't stand up until my hands were scrapping sand. And my goggles only fogged up slightly so hooray!
What would you do differently?:

Work on swim form
Try the homemade anti-fog concoction
Don't get freaked out with weeds
More positive self-talk

Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

It took me about 20 sec to clip both feet in when I mounted my bike
What would you do differently?:

remember a spare towel next time (luckily my friend brought 3 towels and lent me one)
Bike
  • 42m 53s
  • 13 miles
  • 18.19 mile/hr
Comments:

I am most proud of my bike time. I averaged 16.5mph last year on my hybrid, and now with my new road bike, 18.2mph. I tried not to let the bike computer get below 18mph unless I has going up a hill. I thoroughly enjoy the flat courses with an occasional hill. I need to improve my comfort with hills and changing gears with the front ring (can you tell I am new to road biking). It was nice this year to pass more people than get passed. Most people were very nice out on the course and I had no complaints.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time in the saddle
Work on hills

I pushed it just hard enough that my legs were somewhat fried for running, but manageable I guess
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

No problems here. A big improvement from last year. Grabbed my race belt, put my running shoes on, took a swig of water, and a additional puff of my inhaler.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run

Comments:

My calves were very tight. I just kept running. My HRM monitor must have slipped during the swim so I had to estimate my HR (high). I made it to the 1st mile marker in about 9:00min, so I thought I was right on course to try and get as close to a 9:00min/mile. Unfortunately, just before the boat landing on the way back, I threw up in my mouth and pulled off the path and was spitting into the grass. A nice man I was running with said, "did you get a bug in your mouth or something?" I chuckled and said "no, just a little vomit." And off I went. I pushed it hard into the finish and actually threw up again before getting my chip taken off. Of course there were like 15 people hanging on the orange fence who got to watch me vomit. Yummy! I am usually a dry heaver, so I was surprised that that happened, but my stomach had been giving me problems for a few days. Sorry that this was so graphic.
What would you do differently?:

I was happy that I came in 2nd in the athena group for my run, but was a little bummed by my time. I guess there is not much else I could have done, since I pushed myself as hard as I could. I ran a 9:02 pace last weekend in a very hilly 5K, and 9:20 at the Buffalo Tri, after a hilly bike segment. But when I think about it, my time last year was 30:30 (10:10min/mile pace), so the overall trend = improvement.

I need to improve my self-talk and look at all my improvements.
Post race
Warm down:

drank water, chewed gum to get taste out of my mouth. Cheered on my friends who were in the 9th and 10th heats. Ate some food. Stuck around for prizes (I didn't win) and awards (I came in 3rd in the Athena group).

Event comments:

This was my second year doing this race and Bill certainly puts on a good race. The site is beautiful, lots of volunteers, and a really nice atmosphere. Can't wait to do it again next year.
