Swim
Comments: Before I started the swim I was still debating whether or not I was going to do it. I decided to give it a try and lined up in the back of my pack. When the horn went off I trotted into the water and then waded as far out as I could before I started to swim. So this was my first oly and my first ows. I was a bit nervous, but it turned out to be fine. I swam conservatively and felt great. I did have a few moments of breast stroke but I needed them. Having not swum for 4 weeks hurt a lot, but I was happy to finish. What would you do differently?: Not have knee surgery 4 weeks before the race. Also, wear a wetsuit. I think that would have helped a ton. Transition 1
Comments: I was still unsure if I was going to do the bike when I entered transition. When I got to my bike I decided I would do it. I took my time to try to gather myself before I took off. I put my shoes on because I can do the superman jump mount move yet. Running with bike shoes on is really really hard so I went slowly out of T1. What would you do differently?: Go much faster. I need to learn to leave my shoes on my bike and put them on while I ride. Bike
Comments: The bike was pretty fun. I thought it was flat and fast. There was one point when a usat official was hovering right next to me writing on a pad of paper. The only thing I can think was that I was being given an undeserved drafting penalty. When the results came out I didn't have a penalty. I did however notice that the person with number 1000 had a penalty. I was 1060 and it was marked poorly on my arm. What would you do differently?: Again, not get hurt prior to race. I need to stay in my aero bars more and just need to bike more in general. Transition 2
Comments: My legs were gone at this point. I was doing the bike under the assumption that i would not be going out on the run at all. When I got to my rack position I rationalized that I could hobble through 6 miles to finish since I had gone that far. I slapped my running shoes on and took off. I forgot my race belt but didn't realize it until after I had left transition. What would you do differently?: Just go faster. I need to get out of my bike shoes before transition. That would same me some time. Run
Comments: I didn't expect much from this. I actually didn't expect to be doing it. It was hot and my legs were gone. At around mile 2.5 I saw my brother making his way back from the turnaround. That gave me a little boost because I had to catch him. I ran faster for about 100 yards and realized that was not happening. I was happy to make the last turn towards the finish. When I finished my brother was there waiting. It was a pretty awesome feeling since I was unsure if I was going to even start the race. What would you do differently?: Again not get hurt. I did what I could on the run to have a decent time. If I would have not gotten hurt I would have shaved about 20 - 22 minutes off my run time easily. Post race
Warm down: I stretched a bit and iced my knee. I ate some potatoes and drank a couple Gatorades. What limited your ability to perform faster: My surgery. If I would not have done that I would have had a pretty sweet time. Event comments: I enjoyed the race and the atmosphere. The weather was great and venue was very nice. It was a good first experience for an oly. I'm looking forward to doing it again next year. Last updated: 2007-01-08 12:00 AM

We woke up at 4:30 to meet at 4:40. I got a shower and grabbed my bag to meet my brother and his wife at the car.
Other than the 3/4 mile walk to the swim start not much. I waded in the water for a bit to try to get used to it.
