Pre-race routine:

Good nights sleep. Woke up and had some cereal along with a sports drink. I got the bike on the rack and left to pick up Ken. Got to the Res at 5:50.

Event warmup:

Not much of a warm-up. I swam a few minutes before my wave. I had some trouble getting my goggles to seal properly.
Swim
  • 32m 4s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt really good on this swim. I only had to stop once to readjust the goggles. I navigated pretty well and thought I had a nice stroke working. But when I got up out of the water, I was disappointed to see 31 and change. I guess I wasn't pushing it enough. I didn't have any problems with the elbow, so I can't use that as an excuse.
What would you do differently?:

Other than spending money on lessons, I don't think there is much I can do. I have made some good progress in my swimming, given I have only been at it for just over a year. Plus, I've already crushed my swim totals for 2006.
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Pretty smooth getting out of transition, but had a little problem getting my feet in my shoes after the mount. Didn't cost me much time, though.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 1h 13m 20s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 21.35 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt good coming out of T1. I held a pretty good pace on Jay and 36. But Old Stage kicked my butt. I think that took a lot out of me as seen on my run totals. I felt like I got enough fluids and ate Cliff Blocks that were neatly placed on my aerobars (lick and stick). Once over Old Stage, I really cranked it up, but by that time, it was too late for me to hit my goal of 1:10. I passed a ton of people and was passed by only two, one on a very nice looking gold and black GURU. Overall, pretty happy with the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe put on a different cassette. The 11-23 made me work my butt off to get over the hill.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

I was a long ways from the bike in so this was a pretty good time considering.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 51m 20s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where the wheels fell off. I can't figure out if I didn't take in enough fluids on the bike, if it was the heat, if it was the training, or a combination of all of the above. But whatever it was, this was a very poor run. I couldn't get the legs moving. The heat was bothering me. I poured water over my head at every aid station, and it felt so good. I also had a water bottle in my hand. I had to stop 2-3 times to recover. Did I mention the heat?
What would you do differently?:

I guess maybe do longer bricks in the heat to get more accustomed to the weather.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of water on the head to cool off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More focused training and the heat......This was my first OLY, so I am pretty happy with how it went, considering. Now on to my first Half in 3 weeks.

Event comments:

Awesome race.
