Swim
Comments: started mid-way out to side and felt like I stayed out there a bit too long. I noticed this on the other buoys as well. the water was beautiful. the weather was beautiful. What would you do differently?: I should have hugged the buoy line a little closer. Transition 1
Comments: I still haven't tried the leaving shoes on the bike pedals. Maybe at the CHTD later this month. took too much time second-guessing where to put goggles after doffing them. I was surprised at the people straddling their bikes standing still at the start of the bike, I ran ahead of them to do a running jump onto the bike...that's still one of my favorite parts of the race. :) What would you do differently?: plan better. practicing a transition at least once in my life would be smart. ;) Bike
Comments: 8 mph was hit at one point going up a steep climb. I did have to small ring it twice due to some steep climbs. Coasting downhill at one point allowed for 38.5mph on the speedometer. 40+ was possible, but I was chicken. :) What would you do differently?: train, train, train. 669.0 miles on my odometer before the race. Time in the saddle is necessary to realize potential. Transition 2
Comments: no advance warning about dismount area...I had to double brake and felt some momentum going forward as I abruptly came to a stop. What would you do differently?: since there are no hills near where I live, I'd still work on building up a better cycling base. Run
Comments: I was very surprised at the great result. I felt slow in the first mile (uphill and just following the swim and a grueling hilly bike ride). My wife has hilarious video of me running down the finishing path. I came flying past this dude to edge him out by a second. It turned out to be the difference between 49th place as opposed to 50th place overall. :) Also, I had to laugh to myself when with less than 200 yards, as I came up alongside some buff runner so I could pass him, someone in the crowd yelled to him, "Hey Brian, stick with that guy!!" The supporter must not have realized my name is Brian too. Oh well, it cracked me up! :) What would you do differently?: run faster? I don't know, it felt good. I did feel like I had extra energy at the end. I felt like I left a little bit of gas in the tank. Post race
Warm down: great stuff. my family was there. Jay's family was there. Great support from family and friends. I shared 2 pieces of pizza between me and my kids. My son tried a mint Oreo dubble stuff for the first time...I don't think he was impressed. :) What limited your ability to perform faster: just little things...and oh yeah, training of course. Event comments: Excellent. Watch out for me in 2008. ;) Last updated: 2007-01-10 12:00 AM
