Pre-race routine:

I wasn't really feeling very well. Woke up Thursday with a sore throat and slept like crap thursday night. Plus I had ER call thursday which was drama major. Did my cases Friday am and cleaned up the mess at the hospital. My parents came over and picked up the cats. My mom told me I looked exhausted....thanks mom. Packed up the car while Shaun finished his conference call and drove to St. Pete and got checked in at the B&B and at the race.

Shaun and I did the race expo thing. Got a great transition bag for $45. It was hotter than hades and we went back to the hotel and showered and then I laid down for a while. Got cleaned up and met the crew over at Wet Willies. Got to meet the infamous scubapunk...how cool is Frank? So cool :)Dinner and drinks etc with everyone. How weird is it that I know everyone? Went back to the B&B to go to bed.

Saturday: Got up to go Meek and Mighty to see Terri (bunnyrunner) and the little G8Rs race. How cute was that race? SO FREAKING CUTE!!! Both Shaun and I were hungry so we went to the deli for lunch. Shaun was kinda quiet soI wasn't sure what was up with him. Went down and did a little OWS and saw some of the crew. Went back to the B&B to get bikes. Shaun threw up a few times :( poor guy. We laid on the florr for a bit and he said he wasfeeling better. I asked him if he wanted to skip the planned biking the run course and just drop the bikes off in transition but he said hewanted to ride so off we went. I knew he was feeling like poo because I kept having to slow down for him. We got to transition where he promptly disposed of any remaining food or fluid in his belly. Dropped the bikes and I planted him in the shade and got some popsicles and water. We sat for a while til he felt better then made it to the expo where I planted him in the shade with another bottle of water and I picked upa bar end doodad...I have aero bars but I guess there are bar end stoppers on the brake end and one of mine was missing. This appeared to be a problme for on official and just fine for another but I didn't want to take a chance so I picked up a new one for the morning.

Got Shaun back otthe B&B where he lost some more food showered and planted him in bed while I ran out to Publix for some ginger ale, gatorade and saltines. Came back surrounded hime with fluids and ran back to Plant City to get my medical bag to get some IV fluids etc for Shaun to see if I could tank him up and salvage his race.

Poor CubeFarmPinCushion. I tried about 1/2 a dozen times to get a line. I got a flash and hooked him up but the darn thing infiltrated. KPT (Janices friend) who is a paramedic and probab;y muchbetter at starting IVs tried and could not get a line either cause he was so dry. He was just going to have to drink lots. He showed signs of being better hydrated thru the night and even got up and ate poptarts..all good.

He wanted to get up at 4:30 so we did. I got up feeling like that cold I was trying to deny was in full force. I took 1/2 an Aleve Cold and Sinus. I am still not sure if this was a good or a bad move. I didn't feel snotty but my head was kind of woozy the whole day and the meds made me really dry on a very hot day. We went down and did the body marking set up transition thing walked back to the B&B and laid down to rest some more. Ate some poptarts. Went down to the dining room at like 6:15 and Janice is just taking her sweet time having breakfast...I was like "Um Janice you do know transition closes at 7am?" SH*T nope she didn't...thank God I said something!!!

Shaun and I donned our wetsuits and walked to the swim start. The timing chip pikcup was complete cahos this year. They had nice velcro leg straps the last 2 years and it took like 2 seconds to get your chip. This year it was a mess. Found Shaun. Tried to find Wendi to do her hair. Eventually I found her but Janice had already done it for her. Hung out with the BTers I could find
Event warmup:

Walk over from the B&B. I swam a little. Soon it was time to say good luck to people and await my 8:35 start.

Comments:

I had high hopes for this swim. I have been making some nice swim improvements. There was A LOT of contact. More than my ironman I think and it was almost the whole swim. And for some strange reason my left hand went numb during the last leg. No idea. The conditions were really good. I felt good the whole way my time just sucked. There was a lot of contact the first 300-400 yards. It cleared a bit after the first turn the after making the second turn the contact was bad again. I have bruises on my legs from the swim. People were too slow to pass and they just seemed to be everywhere. I got out of the water and my watch said 2:01 WTF? someone had kicked my watch 2 minutes intothe race and stoped it. GGRRRRR
What would you do differently?:

wear football pads perhaps? I need ot learn to be aggressive in open water. I am a better swimmer than that
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Had a little trouble fiding my space as they re-arranged the way transition was set up this year. I just sit downon the grass and take off my wetsuit. My calves are kinda big and I always have trouble. Helmet and glasses on grab bike off I go. This is the first year I was not winded and able to run with my bike. Another sign I didn't push enough on the swim
What would you do differently?:

this is good for me.

Comments:

POO. Just POO. I thought I was doing well but compared to everyone else I just sucked. I guess I didn't push hard enough and maybe was not aggressive enough going over the speed humps. I thought I took the corners well. The last 5 miles there was a bit of a head wind. I don't know maybe I don't believe in myself enough.
What would you do differently?:

push harder be more aggressive
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Rack bike sit down socks and shoes on, hat, bottle of e-fuel, off I go
What would you do differently?:

not much. I need socks or I get blisters. Well worth the 10 seconds it takes me to put them on

Comments:

Came out of T2 and saw KPTwho informed me that Janice had made it thru the swim WHOOP WHOOP and Shaun was safely outon the run course WHEW. Because of my watch problem I didn't have a good idea where I was at time wise and what I needed to do to go sub 3 hours. This is really hard for me.

As for my run.....POO. Asthma sucks. This went quickly from I want to go sub 3 hours to I do not want to end up in the medical tent or the ER. Last year I found out I have exercise induced asthma. Thing is I have to have the right combination of things happen for it to be a problem. It has to be hot, the allergens have to be high I have to be exerting myself plus I had a cold. The plan was a 4:1 run walk but after about 2 minutes I started wheezing. It like trying to breth thru a straw under water. I slowed down and got my HR and breathing under control. I could not run 4 minutes. How pathetic is that? ran as much as I could walked as litle as I felt safe.

Saw tons of BTERs. Saw Shaun upright and not vomiting just over the bridge. Made the turn in 38 minutes. My left foot was hurting a lot. Took my shoe off and tried to get the cushion out ofthe forefoot...couldn't do it. Put shoe back on but seriously considered running the last 2 miles barefoot. Jess caught up to me but she is much too fast for me even on a good day and this was not a good day. I had my worst wheezing attackof the race when she was with me...she was like "Gee thats really scray" Um yeah. I didn't want to hold her back and kept telling her to go. She went on and I finished the last mile
What would you do differently?:

bring inhalers DUH!!! get new orthotic for stooid foot
Post race
Warm down:

went thru the chute, got water, got chip cut off, cut finishers medal, checked the med tent to be sure Shaun wasn't in there. Got out of the crush of people and found some BTers. KathyG was having trouble so I tried to rub out her legs til the medics got there. Shaun and I went backto the B&B and got clean and came back to get our stuff. Helped out some BTers in need and broughtour stuff back to the B&B

What limited your ability to perform faster:

asthma, cold, stoopid foot, sucky body

Event comments:

This is a very well run race. Always fun to see and meet new BTers.

I am very disappointed in my performance. I train really hard and consistently. I could handle it if I didn't train. I'm the type of person who needs to improve if I am going to invest so muchtime and energy into things. I'm tired of injuries. I'm tired of being crappy at this. Its time to re-evaluate participating in this sport.
