Pre-race routine:

Ate breakfast, hung out at home while kids all slept and went to race. It is in Wakefield right at the exit at Firmman bike course where we got on to Route 1..brought back fond memories.

I hadn't felt good Friday or Saturday and woke up with my RHR about 10 above where it normally is.
Event warmup:

About 22 minutes before race start, did loosening excercises, ran for about 10 minutes with a couple of accels, found Kevin stayed inside until just before start to keep warm. It was sprkinling which while running made you feel comfortable.

Goals for 5K today: Push myself, make it hard effort and accept that it may hurt. Start running first mile as fast as I can and see what I can do from there.

I am not at peak fitness so I very much doubt I will be close to my PB of 26:48 This is all about learning how to pace and find that balance of pushing but not to much that I blow up. If I blow up who cares I'll have learned something from the race.

I'm doing run races each weekend during the off season at end of my rest weeks to practice pacing/pushing.

Comments:

I placed myself well at start so I passed a few folks in the first mile and not by many passed me which can be depressing. Felt good starting and didn't get dropped off the back like normal. I was breathing hard/pushing within a couple minutes of the start. Felt fast for me first mile which was the goal.

I had taped over the face of my HRM in order to just run and be free of self judgement as I'm my biggest critic often when racing. It worked great in I kept positive the whole race which is HUGE progress for me.

I thought I was at mile marker two and thought the race will be over soon and how quickly time had gone by as my normal is like how much time do I hve left..here I felt the opposite...enjoying it more. Got to mile 2 and felt good and didn't feel as if I had slowed down. Someone was right behind me breathing hard, thought it was a guy; they stayed close and finally passed me after about 1/2 mile a chubby women...bummed by that. Tried to stay with her but couldn't.

Found most of the race I was in that place I get when I run where thoughts sort of flow thru my head without concentrating on anything...I think of it like a river flowing...stuff comes in and goes out. Played around with my stride working on lean and phone booth drills I've been doing since October.

Pushed as hard as I could to the finish....saw my time as I crossed and was okay with it. Again progress on not being hard on myself.

PB in a real 5K race (last one 30:05) which is awesome considering I'm in the middle of my off season and not feeling 100%. 2nd best 5K ever and the faster one was at my peak fitness at end of tri season.

Wore shorts, LS wicking shirt, vest...should have worn light tights as I was cold all day after race. Race day weight 164.6
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing pushing myself and pacing.
Post race
Warm down:

Found Kevin, went inside. Think perhaps I dressed not warm enough as I was cold all afternoon.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to learn to run faster. My goal is to run 7:59 m/m pace in 5K at peak fitness September 2007.

From where I started this is really a great race for me...MOP in a running race...pretty cool!

Who wants to do a 5K the weekend of Feb 6th or 7th? 6th there is one in Tweskbury only $.50, 7th 2 options as it is Super Bowl Sunday one is RI by beach or Worchester..I'd go where you guys want to go if others are interested? Will post on MA board.

Event comments:

Little local race, nice t-shirt, had variety of soups afterwards, friendly folks, for $15 nice race.
