Run
Comments: Took me twelve minutes to get the start line. I had planned on loosing my long sleeve shirt, hat and gloves within the first couple of miles but ended up keeping the shirt on through 13, gloves until 15 and never the hat. I stuck to my plan of every 5 miles taking in Power Bar gel...and drinking water. Felt good and no ITB troubles so started to pick it up at 20 to see if I could break 4:30. Just as I did this..my right knee started to get sore so backed off and continued at a steady pace. Never hit the wall so very happy with that. What would you do differently?: Probably nothing. I stuck to the plan of starting off at the 4:40 pace and not getting caught up in the moment. I think that is what hurt me last year in my first Marathon ever. I got caught up in the pace at the beginning and couldn't recover. This time I stayed back, let people pass me and did let them pull me along. Post race
Warm down: Warm down was just that...trying to stay warm. Headed to the fountain to meet up with my family. Since it was a little chilly we didn't spend a lot of time hanging out but my parents and wife's parents took the kids back as my wife and I headed to find a place to sit down and have a drink and relax. I felt good. Legs were sore but still able to walk pretty good. I felt fortunate as we were walking...there were many runners "hobbling" and some even having trouble stepping up curbs. We had a couple drinks and soaked it all in...before catching the "L" for her Grandmothers. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing. Because of the previous years ITB troubles, I wanted to run 4:30 or 4:40 and I stuck to that plan. Event comments: Great race. Great atmosphere. Best and worst is there are so many spectators. Best - Great that you run the whole course and there isn't a area where someone isn't cheering you on. Worst - Setting up meeting points for my family and to see them...and there are so many people that you can't find them. Last updated: 2007-01-11 12:00 AM

Had pasta with the family the night before. Had a pretty good night's sleep and got up around 5a. Had a quick cup of coffee and a banana. We stay at realitives on the northside of Chicago so was on the road by 5:30a to make sure we didn't hit any traffic.
I got dropped off around 6a and took it all in again. All the runners and volunteers....amazing. I got dropped off a little farther down on Lake Shore than last year so had to re-orient myself on where to go. Started to eat my bagel as I found a spot to change...also scoped out the area to find a place to go to the bathroom since the port-a-potties were 15 deep.
