Pre-race routine:

One cold and snowy day. Dropped kids at grandma's, and Lisa forgot racing belt, sunglasses, snack and ID so we went back home a bit. Only the racing belt ended up being used (wait, the snack too).

We were both suffering from colds/sore throats, and slept poorly. Grandma reported not sleeping for three nigths worrying about us! :) Then she decided we didn't know what we were doing, but she wasn't going to worry anymore!

Showed up a little early because of the icey highways and not wanting to be late or drive dangerously. Had gone there the day before to scope it all out. Got our number in the volunteer fire department where everyone was set up and getting ready. Lots of good athletes. Lisa was one of maybe 10 women, and a total of maybe 75 contestants.

Got music all on and ready, and GPS didn't catch a satelite yet by the time we started.
Event warmup:

None, really. Too cold for that. No one did.

Comments:

Lisa and I ran together. We don't do a ton of running in this sort of weather, that's for sure. The snow was falling and it was like 15 degrees out. Luckily, not much wind.

Lisa was dying most the way, and we had to stop to catch our breath a couple of times. I wanted to too. Very refreshing. Seems the cold made it hard to breath, and we struggled to breath through mufflers and such.

I kept talking about the beauty of everything, and Lisa didn't. :) We passed couple of gals after the turn around, and she gave us a high-five. We both love people like that. How classy.

Our Merrills performed awesomely, really holding the ground in the trails which were up, down, and around, and very slick. Stability when it counted!

We finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

No music - why hassle with the gear. Lisa put it away and felt so much better not carrying something.

Sunglasses were not used, just carried.

Need better clothing over nose/mouth.

Head-gear needs to be done differently, it was distracting for Lisa who had a white ear warmer - too big. My ear warmer was good. Didn't need the headphones, since my battery died. Baseball hats would have shielded us and been warm enough with ear warmers so the eyelashes and eyebrows would not have frozen over.

Fleece just gets heavy with the sweat and melting snow. Better to have a running jacket that cuts the wind and is lighter/tighter. Tights too. Sweat pants, not bad, but tights would have been better.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a Red Bull and granola bars and stood around in the volunteer fire department for a little while and took wet clothes off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough running in this kind of weather to get our gear right, and prepare our lungs/minds. Lisa had too big of a workout yesterday.

Event comments:

Next time we'll be better prepared. Thought it would be more frollick in the snow. Lisa wasn't even going to count it as a workout - but found out differently.

Performance: Good
Course: Started in front of the volunteer fire department. Enjoyed the course - it was beautifu. Started north to an abandoned rail track through the middle of the town of 200 people, went generally southeast on the trail, turned around, and then dodged into the woods on the north adjacent to the train line. Then back, up the road north of town, to the t intersection (past the 5k turn around) then west a mile or so and back. In town, we turned northwest on the trail track trail, through woods again (with some steep climbs we had to get on all fours to go over), then back to the fire department finish line.
