Swim
Comments: I need to wear my wetsuit no matter what if allowed. I had a hard time with the chop and felt as if I was swimming backwards on the way out. I used a lot of energy fighting the chop. Also I need to get in OWS as part of my training. What would you do differently?: Wear a wetsuit. Take my time and try to remain calm. I get too nervous before the swim and find my performance suffers because of my nerves. Transition 1
Comments: Ok my transitions need some work. I got to my spot ok and was in my shoes in no time. The bike exit was close to my transition spot so I ran in my bike shoes. My problem started when I tried to put on my helmet. The adjustable part of the helmet was closed and I couldn't get the helmet on. After struggling to try and open it I just forced it on which broke the damn thing. I pulled the chin strap very tight to keep the helmet on my head. What would you do differently?: Practice, practice, and more practice. Bike
Comments: I felt good during most of the ride. In retrospect I could have pushed a little harder on the climbs. They were not that difficult and I left some in the tank just in case there was a long hard climb to come. What would you do differently?: Drive the course before the race to get a better sense of the terrain on the course. Transition 2
Comments: This tranition didn't go any better then the first. I dismount my bike by swinging my right leg over usually. Well I unclipped my right leg and started the swing. Uh Mike, the left shoe is still clipped into your bike. Came this close to face planting in front of a bunch of spectators. I heard a few gasp. How embarrassing. Get to my spot and take off the bike shoes. I try to put on the socks but without powder they just wouldn't go on. Put my running shoes on and started off. Oh shoot I forgot my garmin on the bike. Run back and get it. Start running again. Hit the stop button on the Garmin to switch to the next sport in the multisport mode. I see it reads biking stopped. Push it again it reads biking started. After the race I remember its the lap button that moves you through the different sports and transitions. What would you do differently?: See transition 1 comments. Run
Comments: I seem to have a problem coming off the bike into the run. My right calf cramps almost everytime. I must have a problem with my pedal stroke. I didn't/couldn't push more on the run and I am happy with my performance other than being slow. I was passed a lot on the run and that was disappointing. Especially when a much older man passed me like I was standing still. What would you do differently?: Work on my running during training. I have to get faster than 9 minute miles. Post race
Warm down: Nothing really just walked around and drank water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inconsistent training. No OWS practice. Poor execution in the transitions. Unfamiliar with the course. First time swimming in such a strong current. Event comments: Great race. I will be back next year for sure. Last updated: 2007-01-12 12:00 AM

I woke up around 5:30 and had some coffee. I ate a bagel with PB and a banana. I didn't drink much water before the race and I will make sure the next race I am hydrated better before the start. I got to the race site and headed to the transition area. It was nice having assigned spots on the racks. Set up my area and went to get marked and pick up my chip.
I jogged about 5 minutes or so and swam a bit to test the water temp and chop. I think I need a more structured warm up for my next race.
