Pre-race routine:

Left Vegas on Thursday and went to the lower Colorado, Topoc Marsh/Gorge and did some scouting for a kayak trip in the future. Got to the race hotel had a few beers and some very nice people in the poker room subsidized our trip for us. Pam and I had a late night dinner @ about 10 pm. We slept great and a lot longer than usual, we got up and ran the first part of the course at 9 am. It was a good run, I didn't feel overly stong for all the rest I had, but it is what it is. Took a couple of good naps throught the day had two protein with physillium smoothies at the planned times a glass of wine and a beer and ate our big meal at about 4 pasta and chicken for me, only ate at most half, the rest was good Saturday night. Got up at 6 am Saturday and jogged over to the convenience store got coffee for Pam and myself snacked on a cliff bar and went to the start line about 8:45
Event warmup:

Got to the race at 8:45 and did about a 1.5 mile wu did 3 sprints and some stretching and drank my gatorade. When the race started I had a 12oz bottle of water which I dran during the first 4 or 5 miles.

Comments:

I never flet real strong or comfortable the whole race, I am guessing that was because I was pushing it pretty good. I did have a nice hard sprint to the finish, :)
What would you do differently?:

Start the first mile off just a tad easier than I did and press it a little more in the middle portion of the course. A couple of times I felt like I may have been dogging it just a little bit and looking at the time and hr data I think I was, not much but just a little. Overal I am very very happy. Pam kicked A$$ too.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged back to the hotel to get the camera and take pics of my sweetie when she crossed the finish line...... I had to hussle, she ran it faster than I thought she would.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm an old man with Grandkids, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!! :)

Event comments:

2nd to last aid station ran out of water, they had pleanty of Gatorade and of course that was the one I ate my last goo at. Figures.

I really like this race due to the course and I prefer smaller venues and the smaller race organizations.

Course: After we did our run on Thursday these were my thoughts. ************* The Plan************* Stick to the right side, it's flatter and harder, pick a good line and stick to it. Glad we did a pre run on the first part of the course. Either the road is rougher than last year or it's a little bumpier than I remembered. Practice run was windy, if it's windy, find some pace booty and draft it, Pam says I'd be better off finding a big guy and drafing off him,,, whatever. :) I can't go sub 1:50 in the first few miles but if I go out to hard I can prevent myself from having a chance. Do a good warm up run about 1.5 to 2 miles with 4 or 5 short spint outs. Drink some gatorade after I finish my warm up. The course is flat flat flat on a gravel acces road running along the Colorado river.
