Pre-race routine:

My wife and my mother both ran this race as well, so we all got up around 4:15am, had some coffee, ate a Cliff Bar, bundeled up in the outer wear clothes we bought at the Goodwill for $20 the day before, and headed down to the parking area by Sun Devil Stadium. Buses took us to downtown Phoenix to the start. We paid for a special heated staging area with tents and bathrooms, free food, Starbucks, the works! Best $20/ person we could have spent as we stayed warm and had nice facilities to use.
Event warmup:

Hung out, had another Cliff Bar and a GU before leaving for the start. I don't really have a pre-race routine, just want to get going.

Comments:

Well, I pushed the upper limit of my AT heart rate for the first half and felt some effect of that later. I was looking to average 161bpm, which is my established AT and I ended at 162pbm. The last 6 miles were a grind as always, the 2.2 miles was a serious gut check. Once I passed mile 25 marker, I knew I had to really push to get under 3 hours and I just made it. This was my second Mararthon, I ran this same race last year in 3:33, so I am very happy with the results.
What would you do differently?:

Ease up on the pace a little for the first Half, try and get in one more GU after the first hour or so. My stomach felt a little unsettled, so I didn't use the GU's I had and just ucked on acclerade at the aid stations. Probably could have used some more calories, but I was afraid of being sidelined in a porta- pottie so i just sucked it up.
Post race
Warm down:

Stiff and sore, vbut got to see my 64 year old mom finish in 4:23:56 (she's finished over 20 in her years), and my wife coming in at 4:26:54 in her first race with tears in her eyes . :) That was the most special part of the day for me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The cold wasn't a problem, my nutrition was spotty and that may have helped. My form and cadence wasn't so great towards the end and I need to work on that.

Event comments:

It's huge and very well run. They could use more food at aid stations prior to mile 20, however.
