![]() Swim
Comments: it was like a washing machine and really never got positioned to catch a draft with the rolling waves. Did meet my prerace stated goal of beating my swim time from 2 years ago here What would you do differently?: get physically upper body stronger for ocean swims, just more experience with ocean swims as this was number 4 ever and I've probably done 50+ triathlons ![]() Transition 1
Comments: okay transition- put my glasses on and I could see again:) What would you do differently?: I do transitions like a long course athlete- if I'm going to race short course I need to practice certain rapid T1 skills ![]() Bike
Comments: stated prerace was to beat time from 2 years ago and did it by 11 seconds. Satisfied with that since I've done far less saddle time than that year. New Profile Designs Aquacell 2 chamber drink system works well- Infinit in one and water in the other and okay to refill on the fly plus it didn't splash all over What would you do differently?: Push a touch harder as I really just settled into a comfortable not really hard pace as I was worried about the run ![]() Transition 2
Comments: didn't really run the bike in, more walked. Huge transition area and I was racked at almost the opposite end from the swim/bike in. Sat down and put on shoes and socks and then started moving and had to fix the shoe laces as they were too long and flopping What would you do differently?: hustle more ![]() Run
Comments: pre-race goal- survive the run. Check yes, did that. I had ran exactly 2 miles since doing the Martian Half with my sister 3 weeks prior and those 2 miles hurt due to whatever is/was wrong with my right quad so this was going to hurt either from actual pain or due to not having ran. Actually think the biggest problem was heat acclimation although ended up with a little pain in the left thrice operated knee(fine today). First mile was 8:57, then 18:30ish at mile 2 and stayed about 10 min miles for the rest of it. 6 minutes slower than 2 years ago but other than walking aid stations ran almost all of it and it didn't hurt so it was as successful as could be. Got really hot though, maybe due to not having even started the race until almost 9 am? Anyway hopefully will help with heat acclimation for FL 70.3. Saw Sue on the run and passed Sister Madonna- hope I can still be doing this at 78 What would you do differently?: not get hurt running in early March and have done some actual running ![]() Post race
Warm down: got a cold towel and cold gatorade and did a little stretching then got in the long line to retrieve my bike from transition. Had to be out of the hotel by 2 and needed a shower and to pack the bike. Didn't check out their food as I was too hot and food just didn't sound good. Walked the 0.82 miles back to the swim start and finally got hungry when almost back there so got hot dog, soda, and chips from corner vendor What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of run training as took it easy on the bike due to worry over run and duh the run would be faster if I had actually ran in training. Heat acclimation Event comments: Would do it again if was on the mainland but will be too far from HI. Fun going to Tampa Bay Rays vs the Red Sox Friday evening and hanging out with BTers Saturday evening. Good expo- picked up some tri shorts for my sister, new helmet(Bell Vela- cheap) as my Atmos had a broken retention system when I took it out of the bike box on Friday(think the plastic got brittle, based on my two year rule it was probably due for replacement anyway but I hadn't planned on it yet), Profile Design Aquacell and some Luna Moons(like Clif ShotBlocks but more palatable) Last updated: 2007-01-14 12:00 AM

Had to be clear of transition by 0645 due to the pro males starting at 0650 so got up shortly after 5, drove to and parked at the pier 100 m from the swim start and walked the 0.82 mi to transition. Pumped my tires up, set up nutrition, and left the my glasses in my new helmet so I couldn't see for the next 2 hours. Wandered around looking for my jockstrap for 30 min before giving up and walking back to the car. Ate some yogurt and drank some water and basically just relaxed until almost 8:30 when I got the wetsuit on and sunscreened and bodyglided.
