Pre-race routine:

I felt good going into the race. I tapered well, although me last run before was a disaster. We got up early and headed up to Boulder and set up the transition in a fence spot so my wife and parents could see.
Event warmup:

Not much. I rode the bike up to the transition area and then swam some, which is pretty much the only time I felt good in the water.
Swim
  • 1h 02m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 03m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

I never relaxed in the water and it made for a bad swim. I probably had one 5 minute period where I was relaxed and made good progress. Towards the end I cramped pretty bad as well which made the rest of the day difficult. I think it was because I never relaxed becuase I was well-hydrated leading into the event.
What would you do differently?:

I need to swim a lot more before my next tri, which will be sometime next year.
Transition 1
  • 03m 38s
Comments:

Dried off, put on shoes and helmet and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, this was a minute paster than the sprint.
Bike
  • 1h 53m 8s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 13.84 mile/hr
Comments:

I expected better from the ride but the cramps made it tough. On the climb I had to stop and stretch my calves, otherwise it felt good. I was also the only person on the course with a mountain bike, and this just cemented by plans to by a road bike this fall.
What would you do differently?:

Not cramp on the swim

Ride a road bike
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Took my time to change shirts and start out on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not drink that gatorade on my way out
Run
  • 1h 29m 3s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 14m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was a struggle. The cramps never went away and they made it hard to keep a good pace, especially on the first half. I played the mental game where I would run to a post and then walk, and then do it again.
What would you do differently?:

Not cramp on the swim.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank some water, had some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Extra body weight.

Not having a road bike.

Not being able to swim efficiently.

Event comments:

The race is great, and despite the above, I had a lot of fun. I really enjoy being out there with the other racers and the support.
