Run
Comments: Okay, so I had trained for this race as a "B" race... I was going to pace my run buddy at about a 10 m/m pace. At the last minute, she decided she wanted to go at it on her own, and so I was left to my own devices. In my head, it seemed like a great idea to race this all out, just to see where my fitness was. Perhaps not the best thought ever, but that's how this started. The first 5k was sloooow, though my legs were telling a different story! At that point, I decided to just relax and run, knowing that I wouldn't hit my PR. The next 5k, I must have flown... I hit the 10k mark at 53:02 (btw, my best standalone 10k time), which means I must have been running sub 8-minute miles. And felt great, too. At 10 miles, I had fallen off that pace a bit, but was still trucking along pretty well. By about mile 10-11, it got tough, though. I hadn't had enough to drink (I was nauseous from the outset of this race), and had only taken 1 gel. And the end of this race (esp. mile 12) has a couple of uphills that seem unending. But - the end of the race was the downhill of a bridge, which helped my tired legs considerably! Turns out that I missed PR-ing by about 40 seconds... a little frustrating, but since I didn't really think I was going to be able to do that from the outset, it doesn't upset me much. I figure, if I can come that close on a hilly course, I should be good once I hit flat land! What would you do differently?: Hydrate better. Do more hill training. Post race
Warm down: Walked through the seemingly-endless queue to get water, mylar, medal, food (dunkin donuts!) and photos. Then worked my way back to the finish line to see my running buddy finish (I missed her, though). What limited your ability to perform faster: Not training for the race as an "A" race. My pace was ALL over the place... from 9:10 for the first 5k, to 7:55 for the second 5k... if I would have stayed more consistent, I probably could have turned in a better race. Event comments: I really enjoy this race.. it's my 4th time doing it, and I plan to come back next year as well. This year they topped 30,000 runners and it made a difference on the course -- definitely more crowded. But with the wave start, I felt like I had enough room to run; only a few times did I feel like I was slowing down because I had to weave around people. The bands along the way are great and the crowd support increases every year as well. If nothing else, I love the fact that this race is Saturday morning so you can go out and enjoy downtown Nashville on Saturday night! Nashville is such a fun town. Last updated: 2007-01-16 12:00 AM

Up early at the hotel, shower to wake myself up and down to the lobby for some breakfast. Had a bagel with honey -- honey is a new thing, but they didn't have anything else and I didn't want a dry bagel, so I went with it. Had an upset stomach the entire race and I wonder if this had anything to do with it...
Kim39 drove us to the race site -- we were early, of course -- and we milled around for awhile, waiting in porta-potty lines and such. A couple of raindrops fell, but that was it. Not a bad race morning -- chilly but good running weather.
Hopped around in my corral, chatting with other folks. Spotted a guy who looked JUST LIKE Abe Lincoln. No kidding. Tall as anything, same beard... all he needed was a top hat and tails to complete the outfit.
