Run
Comments: Well, I am a little disappointed.. to not have beaten my 1st marathon back in 2003, but then that was Grandmas , I trained better, the course was harder this time...and I am four years older. I also didn't consider this a A run.. but nonetheless I did have this goal of 4:30 or better.. so doing the 13" miles was a bit disconcerting. I began the race with high hopes of keeping a steady 10" mile... but almost immediately (at mile 1) I had to use the BR.. and I had to wait almost 2 minutes for it (as several individuals had to use the 1 .. yes 1 bathroom at mile 1).. so I about 3-4 minutes later I hit the road again... I pushed myself up to sub 9"s attempting to catch up to the 4:30 cround (pace group) and found myself with them at mile 3-4ish. Talked with the pacer holder the sign (an older woman). They were going a bit faster then a 10" mile.. I continued just slightly ahead of them until mile 11ish. Keep my pace going until around mile 15, when I had to use the BR again... this time I was in and out in prolly 1-2 minutes.(6 BRs this time)... I stopped drinking for 4 miles this time... as I was obviously too hydrated. I ate gu's every 45-1' ... and washed down gatorade+water at the water stops. Water stops were setup every 2 miles and after mile 15 I drank every other stop. After starting back up again after BR break 2 ... I slowed down to 11ish miles.. I had pretty good time and thought I could still hit the 4:30... I kept doing the math in my head and checking my Garmin 305 for pace... I kept slowling down each mile though... and after mile 20.. a pinacle point for me.. I was down to 12s. I stopped at the water stops each time now.. my legs were aching something fierce... when I stopped it was like limping.. I was just wasted.. even though my HR was low and my heart in general felt fine.. no uppper body aches or breathing issues.. my pathetic legs just couldn't hold up to the pounding... or my mind caved at the pain signals. whichever.. I obviously need to continue to stregthen my legs.. my weights will help this next year or I will never get faster... I sprinted the last .2 miles into the finish line... and thanked God for giving my the stregth to finsih my 2nd marathon... What would you do differently?: Put my training back a few more months and work up to 55-60 a week at a peak point. Take 40-45 a week for a full month. Do my weight training earlier in the season on leg lifts, squats, leg press, etc. It was tough with biking and swimming to combine the weights... I have had this problem of managing these disciplines consistently now since I begin this journey. Post race
Warm down: Well.. lets see.. I ddin't just collapse.. so that was good.. THe athletic village really sucked.. I only got one bottle of water.. I asked for another one and the guy (with 100s stacked up ) wouldn't give me another one.. I wanted to just beat the crap out em... holy crap.. I was like pretty close to last even.. so what gives.. The finish area was terrible.. worse thing I have witnessed. I walked over under a tree and Ean took pictures of my sorry ass as I lay in the shaded and rested for a few minutes. Event comments: Terrible post race activities.. A huge LARGEST BEER and BRAT festival was next store though... with beer, brats, and fair rides.. They said they were going to sell over 200,000 brats over the weekend. Ean and Sheryl has some before I showedu p.. but brats after 26.2 miles just didn't sound too good ... I showered at the expo-building and we stopped at SUbway on our way out of town. 5 hours later I got home and crashed into my bed and slept a few hours before getting up and eating dinner... I said I was winthin walking distance to the race start.. at Capital Square... he said get up and eat.. so I got up .. ate my banana and a little bit of a granola bar. Drank a LifeSobe and walked over to the starting line with Sheryl and my yougest Ean. It was very cold in the morning lows 50s... Only 1029 racers in the marathon. I wasn't planning on pushing myself in this race.. just finishing would be good!
