Pre-race routine:

dinner at Olive Garden with BT.group. .. woke up around 4:30.. ate fudge cookie and a marathon bar. Drank Vitamin water.. Temp was 77.. so I put glide and the wet suit on..
Event warmup:

Once I got to site, I saw around the swim area.. no sea weed!! thats nice compared to last week at turtle man.. waited for the waves to kick off... Noz, MNDiver and I stood spectatining until our respective wave took off..

Comments:

well.. i got hit in the face a couple of times.. i hate waves for this reason.. my google tightened up on one eye.. so I was able to recover and just unplug it a little.. seemed like I had people around me the whole time..
I zip zaged a lot I think.. at one point the jet ski had to catch me from gooing off course on the first side of the triangle. Overall, I was happy, I did below 2:00 100s so thats decent for me.. getting below 1:30 would be like a wet dream for me.. this time was 1 minuite lower then my Square Lake HIM time.. so I am generally happy with my performanc.
What would you do differently?:

not zig zag. avoid getting punched.

Comments:

Im such a slow poke in the t-zones. seemed like I took a nap or something.. holy cow 6+ minutes.. I used the BR on bike out... stuggled getting my socks and shoes on.. walk up to the t-zone was lengthy.. zipped out of my wet suit properly.. ( a first!!) and had it half off before getting to my bike.

What would you do differently?:

no idea.. i dont know the meaning on hustle i guess
Bike
  • 3h 04m 4s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.25 mile/hr
Comments:

Those rumbles at the stops were just killer.. man I hate those... and the RR tracks.. kindah scary .. overall the bike section was pretty easy I thought... rolling hills in and out of the river valley... not too bad.. a little head wind here and there.. but generally nice and calm.. no rain while I was on the bike.. and overcast.. would have liked that on the run.. but oh well.. Really wanted sub 3 on the bike.. 4 minutes away... something to aim for next time I suppose.

This time was 3 minutes faster then my Square Lake HIM.. so again, happy with the time.. However, I think it might have been slightly less then 56 mils according to my GPS watch.. and Square Lake HIM was slightly higher.. avg 18.25 is good for me though..
What would you do differently?:

power train on stegnth and hills more.. i seem to fizzle out on the hills..

Comments:

sortah putted , fast walked to rack.. anticipating the run was scary.. I've knonwn sine last month that the run was going to be tough.. just running/walking to my rack told me that.. once again I used the BR..not too much though... but wanted to be completely free of the thought of peeing.. so I went to be safe..
What would you do differently?:

run instead of walk to my bike. stand and put shoes on instead of sitting... which is what I did at Turtleman.. seems to work better
Run
  • 2h 46m 37s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

i lied to myself the first mile.. body seemed to not mind too much... so I had a sub 9 the first mile... then the hill came and I putt putt up that in 10 minutes or so... hit the corner and took a gulp of gator and water.. then the heat hit me and my skin turned bright red...head felt like an oven... struggled to make it to mile 3 (10 minute mile again).. kept thinking about just getting to mile 3 .. nevermind the other 10 to go.. made it and took ice and crushed it up a little and stuck it in my hat... and down my back.. holy cow I over heated big time.. At that point.. I knew I could keep running...I just walked for .25 and let my body cool down.. the sun had come out by now..so I desparate.. considered stopping .. but only for a fleeting moment. I HAD to finish.. I didn't care if I had 15 minute miles.. I just HAD to.. played mind games from that point forward.. saw Noz pass me at mile 4ish.. he looked strong and fast.. nice going Noz.. Each mile mark I dreamed about the fresh ice.. my body pretty much had no reserves left.. I ate a gu at mile 5.. and took the ice cup with me each mile .. chewed it and ran walked.. .4 run .1-.2 walk .. keep that pace.. run was at 10 minute mile.. walking was 18-19 minute mile.. Saw MNDiver (bryan) at the turn around (he was coming down.. while I was going up (little hill at the turn around)... He looked pretty beaten down.. thought I might catch up .. but after mile 8 it was allI could do to just keep moving... so I lost that thought.. This run was so darining.. I think I must have truly hit the wall.. not sure I have ever had that happen before..
What would you do differently?:

Train 30+ miles per week.. marathon train , but not race marathon.. in order to do get a sub 9 miles in a HIM. I did so much better at Square Lake it aint even funny.. but even there the run kicked my a%%. shorter bike and longer run bricks should do that trick..with emphasis on running Keeping the running regimine in check all winter will help a great deal for next season for sure.
Post race
Warm down:

just collapsed under tree... saw the sphaghetti.. and limped over to eat.. man that was sooo good.. then the rain came .. i went into the food tent and finished my pasta... then I saw the pizza.. and had some of that.. food never taste soo good. stayed for the awards and giveaway... sub 4 minute HIM won the race.. holy cow!!! didn't win any flop... next time maybe!!

Went back to hotel and took a long shower and cleaned .. took a short nap (1/2 hour) and then packed up and drove home... got home around 10:30...stopped at chipotle and had a 1/2 burrito.. mmmm sounded really good to me!! I deserved it .. ate half and then pretty much konked out...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not hit the wall... get this running sh#%( nipped in the bud.. and get some solid 8-9 minute +10 mile runs behimd me!! UGH!!

Event comments:

I really liked this race... very well organized... nice venue.. weather was good for the swim and bike.. Other then it being 5 hours drive ... Id do it again .. think I ll look for another one though for next year maybe closer.. if possible... Still considering whether I do IM Moo now.. lots of planning and training in front of me if I go for it!!
