Comments:

I found this to be a much tougher run than the half marathon I did last fall. I'm much more tired now than I was then. I had to walk on many of the steeper sections. Many. Tried to make up time on the infrequent flats.

To put my absurd time in at least a little perspective, the winner finished at 51 minutes. And he must have floated over the rocks.
What would you do differently?:

Wear contacts instead of glasses. They steamed up from mile 1.5 to the finish and made picking my footing difficult.

Need to practice more hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Nearly collapsed in front of the breakfast pavillion. Downed some eggs, pancakes, and Spaten.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of experience with such steep hills. Loose rock underfoot. Steamed up glasses.

Event comments:

Although I was praying for death on more than one occasion, it was a really good race. I learned how tough trail racing can be. I will go back for the Ugly Mudder next month (same course).

Course: This is a very steep and challenging course. The majority of it is on rocky single track traversing and climbing steep slopes. At 0.2 miles is a hill ascent with no trail directly up a steep wooded slope. This breaks the pack up a bit for the single track which follows. Steep down and uphills continue to the aid station at mile 2.2. The footing is rocky but firm in this section. From the aid station to mile 4 is also very steep but has some flat sections to break it up. From ~ mile 5 to mile 6 is a nice easy flat double track where I made up some time. Mile 6 to the finish continues steeply uphill on narrow singletrack with loose rock. Shortly before the end you climb a dirt gully pitched at a 45 degree angle. I guess it ascends about 60 or 70 feet but you need hands here. The course is very challenging overall.
